Free Schools In England
A free school in England is a type of academy established since 2010 under the Government's free school policy initiative. From May 2015, usage of the term was formally extended to include new academies set up via a local authority competition. Like other academies, free schools are non-profit-making, state-funded schools which are free to attend but which are mostly independent of the local authority. Description Like all academies, free schools are governed by non-profit charitable trusts that sign funding agreements with the Education Secretary. A faith school is a school in the United Kingdom that teaches a general curriculum but which has a particular religious character or formal links with a religious or faith-based organisation. The term is most commonly applied to state-funded faith schools, although many independent schools also have religious characteristics. There are various types of state-funded faith school, including Voluntary Aided (VA) schools, Voluntary Controlled (VC) schools, and Faith Academies. Schools with a ''formal'' faith designation may give priority to applicants who are of the faith, and specific exemptions from Section 85 of the Equality Act 2010 enable them to do that. However, state-funded faith schools must admit other applicants if they cannot fill all of their places and must ensure that their admission arrangements comply with the School Admissions Code. Becket Keys Church of England School is a free school established in Brentwood, Essex, England in 2012. It was the first Church of England secondary school to be established as part of the free schools programme. The school is sponsored by Russell Education Trust. William Perkin Church Of England High School
William Perkin Church of England High School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in the Greenford area of London, England. History The school was established in 2013. It is a free school sponsored by the Twyford Church of England Academies Trust. The school is named for scientist Sir William Perkin, a pioneer of the chemical industry and discoverer of the dye mauveine, whose factory was nearby. The school has a mauve school uniform as a tribute to him. In July 2017, a 13-year-old student who attended the school, Karanbir Cheema, died after having a severe allergic reaction at his school in west London on 28 June 2017. Cheema was severely allergic to wheat, gluten, all dairy products, eggs and all nuts. Zaytouna Primary School (formerly Al-Madinah School) is a coeducational Muslim faith based free school for pupils aged 4 to 11 located in Derby, Derbyshire, England. History First opened in 2012 as an all-through (ages 4 to 16) school, the opening of the school caused controversy, with some in the Muslim community in Derby opposing the scheme. However a high demand for places at the school was reported when enrolment started in 2012. The idea of a segregated religious school was opposed by the Derby Campaign for Inclusive Education (DCIE) on the grounds that education should be inclusive with children from different backgrounds being educated together so they can make up their own minds as to what to believe as adults. The Fulham Boys School is an English Church of England free school for boys aged 11 to 18. It was founded by a group of Fulham inhabitants and opened in September 2014. Its initial temporary location was in West Kensington in London however there was a second temporary site at Beaumont Avenue. King's School, Hove
King's School, Hove is an 11-19 free school of Christian designation. It is an ecumenical school, although it is not a CofE School, it has roots with the Church of England. The school was originally established on a temporary site in Portslade. In September 2019 the school moved to its permanent site in Hangleton. In early 2020, it was severely damaged by Storm Ciara leading to the temporary closure of the school. Currently it also serves families in the BN3 postcode area.
