By FIFA's latest count in 2006, Ecuador is home to 201 football clubs (175 are listed below). Clubs are not only members of the Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol, Ecuador's football governing body, but of one of 18 provincial football associations in the country. Clubs play in either Primera Categoría (divided into Serie A or Serie B) or Segunda Categoría. Primera Categoría The Primera Categoría is divided into the top-flight Serie A and the second-level Serie B. Each division has twelve clubs. The Ecuadorian Football Federation ( es, Federación Ecuatoriana de Fútbol or ) is the governing body of football in Ecuador. Its headquarters are in Quito, and it organizes the country's various football competitions and oversees the Ecuador national team. History Numerous amateur federations sprouted in the provinces with the largest cities, being Quito, and Guayaquil. Seeking to unify and compete against each federation, the Football Federation was created on May 30, 1925, known as Association of Ecuadorian Football. In 1926, the federation hosted its first organized competition the Riobamba Olimpic, and became FIFA affiliated. In 1927 it formally joined CONMEBOL, but debuted in competition in 1939 in the South American Championship. Club Deportivo El Nacional
Club Deportivo El Nacional (until 2018 ''Club Especializado de Alto Rendimiento El Nacional'') is an Ecuadorian sports club from Quito, known best for their professional football team. The team currently plays in the Serie A, the first-tier football league in the country after gaining promotion in 2022. El Nacional has thirteen national championships (one less than Emelec and three less than Barcelona). The club has participated in more Copa Libertadores than any other club in Ecuador with 22 appearances. Their best performance in the continental tournament was as a semi-finalist in 1985. El Nacional was founded on 1 June 1964, and was administered by the Ecuadorian Military since the foundation until 2013, when the club celebrated its first ever democratic elections. Gualaceo
Gualaceo, nicknamed “El Jardin del Azuay” (The Garden of Azuay), is a canton in the sierra region of Ecuador in the Azuay Province. It is located 35 km east from the city of Cuenca and is one of the biggest cities in Azuay. Gualaceo has 38.587 inhabitants, is crossed by the three rivers Santa Bárbara, San Francisco and Guaymincay, and carries the nickname “El Jardin del Azuay” due to the natural surroundings and mountains. The city currently holds the title of Cultural Heritage Site of the Nation. Gualaceo became an independent canton on the 25 June 1824.
