Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Kevin Wright (Australian Rules Footballer)
Kevin Wright (19 February 1933 – 3 October 2003) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Wright was used initially in the midfield, either as a centre, rover or wingman. Towards the end of his career he played more as a forward after establishing himself with a six-goal haul in the opening round of the 1958 VFL season. Owen Abrahams
Owen Lindsay Abrahams (25 July 1933 – 31 January 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the VFL. Abrahams' football career did not start well after he was rejected by Fitzroy's thirds team, but he moved to the amateurs where he played with the Commonwealth Bank team, from which he was selected with the Fitzroy senior team. Tony Ongarello
Tony Ongarello (22 December 1932 – 18 July 2022) was an Australian rules footballer of Italian heritage who played with Fitzroy Lions, Fitzroy in the Australian Football League, VFL from 1952 to 1960. He played most of his career at full-forward. Ongarello is believed to be the last player in the VFL/AFL to have scored a goal from a place kick, scoring two goals from the kicks late in Fitzroy's narrow loss to Geelong in 1955 VFL season#Round 4, 1955 at Brunswick Street Oval. He was also the last player to attempt a place kick. Ongarello reportedly switched to the place kicks after missing several consecutive set shots from Punt (Australian football), punt kicks in the game. Edward Ronald "Eddie" Hart (16 June 1922 – 16 August 1995) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the VFL during the 1940s. Allan Ruthven
Allan Gordon Ruthven (17 April 1922 – 14 March 2003) was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League. He played his entire 222 game career with Fitzroy. In 1950, Ruthven won the prestigious Brownlow medal. Playing career Ruthven was the nephew of Victoria Cross winner William Ruthven, who was a Collingwood supporter. John William Grant (24 September 1915 – 1 December 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL).
