Els Aarne
Els Aarne (''correctly Else'', Els Paemurru; 30 March 1917 – 14 June 1995) was an Estonian composer and pedagogue. She was born in Makiivka, Russian Empire (now Ukraine) and studied at Tallinn Conservatory, graduating as a music teacher in 1939, in 1942 as pianist and in 1946 as composer under Heino Eller."Arne, Els." Alfred Karindi
Alfred Karindi (30 May 1901 – 13 April 1969) was an Estonian organist and composer. Life and work Alfred Karindi was born on 30 May 1901 in the village of Kõnnu, Illuka Parish. In 1920 he entered the Tartu Higher School of Music where he studied organ under Johannes Kärt and composition under Heino Eller. He graduated in 1927, and then studied under August Topman and Artur Kapp as an external student of organ and composition at Tallinn Conservatory, graduating in 1931. He belonged to the "Tartu school" of musicians who studied under Heino Eller, others being Eduard Tubin, Eduard Oja, Olav Roots and Karl Leichter. Karindi taught music at the Tartu 2nd primary school (1921–1927), Tartu Higher Music School (1925–1928) and University of Tartu (1928–1932). Karindi was organist for Tartu Maarja Church (1925–1929), University of Tartu Church (1929–1933) and Tallinn Kaarli Church (1933–1940). He was known as a skilled improviser on the organ. Malle Maltis
Malle Maltis (born 11 March 1977 in Tallinn) is an Estonian composer. She currently teaches composition and electronic music at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and has been a music director at the Estonian Drama Theatre since 2013. She is also a member of the Estonian Composers' Union. Education Maltis began her musical studies with playing recorder and oboe. In 1999, she studied composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. In 2003, she studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in Utrecht, Netherlands. In 2005-2006 she studied at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Tartini in Trieste, Italy. Ester Mägi
Ester Mägi (10 January 1922 – 14 May 2021) was an Estonian composer, widely regarded as the First Lady of Estonian Music. Biography Her compositional output is substantial and represents all genres, from chamber and vocal music to choral and highly regarded symphonic works. She trained initially under Mart Saar at the Tallinn Conservatory, then from 1951 to 1954 at the Moscow Conservatory under Vissarion Shebalin. Amongst her best-known works are her Piano Sonata (1949), Piano Trio in F minor (1950), Piano Concerto (1953), Violin Concerto (1958), Symphony (1968), Variations for Piano, Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra (1972), ''Bukoolika'' for orchestra (1983) and ''Vesper'' for violin and piano/organ (1990, arranged for strings in 1998). Mihkel Lüdig
Mihkel Lüdig ( in Vaskrääma – 7 May 1958 in Vändra) was an Estonian composer, organist and choir conductor. As a composer, he particularly worked on a cappella choral songs. Lüdig is considered one of the major organisers of large-scale musical events in 20th century Estonia. He was a student of Nicolai Soloviev. Märt-Matis Lill (born 6 November 1975) is an Estonian composer. Märt-Matis Lill was born in Tartu, the son of writer, translator, cultural critic and philosopher Jaan Kaplinski and classical philologist and translator Anne Lill. Guitarist and violinist Emil Lansoo was his grandfather. He studied composition at the Tallinn Music High School under Lepo Sumera. In 1999 he graduated from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Artur Lemba
Artur Lemba (24 September 1885, Tallinn – 21 November 1963, Tallinn) was an Estonian composer and piano teacher, and one of the most important figures in Estonian classical music. Artur and his older brother Theodor (1876-1962) were the first professional pianists in Estonia to give concerts abroad. Artur's 1905 opera ''Sabina'' was the first opera composed by an Estonian. His Symphony No. 1 in 1908 was the first symphony composed by an Estonian. Lemba was a finalist in the prestigious Anton Rubinstein Competition and later a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Early life and education Artur Lemba learned piano from his brother Theodor Lemba. In 1899, following in his brother's footsteps, he enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Aleksander Läte
Aleksander Läte (12 January 1860, in Pikasilla, Aakre Parish, Kreis Dorpat – 8 September 1948, in Tartu) was an Estonian composer, conductor and music critic. He is also known as the first Estonian professional music critic.In 1895, he started his education at Dresden Conservatory and graduated it in choir composition speciality. On the initiative of Läte, the first Estonian symphony orchestra was founded in 1900 in Tartu. In 1900, Läte moved to Tartu, where there were more opportunities to practice music. In 1908, he was forced to withdraw from practical music work due to illness, but continued to work as a composer. In addition to composing, he wrote various scientific articles, was a music reviewer for Postimehe for a long time. Aleksander Läte can be considered the first Estonian professional music critic. Raimund Kull
Raimund Kull (3 October 1882 – 10 October 1942) was an Estonian conductor and composer. Born in Narva, at the time part of the Russian Empire, Kull studied trombone at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1900 until 1906. He then worked as an orchestra conductor in St. Petersburg, Kazan, and Rostov. From 1912 until 1920, he was the chief conductor of the Estonian National Opera, from 1920 the conductor and from 1930 to 1942 the music director. From 1918 until 1927, he was the conductor of the orchestra of the Estonian Navy, and from 1934 until 1939, conductor of the National Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Kull was one of the founders of Tallinn Conservatory, established in 1919 during the Estonian War of Independence, and taught trombone at the conservatory from 1929. Ülo Krigul
Ülo Krigul (born 7 November 1978 in Tallinn) is an Estonian composer. In 1997 he graduated from Tallinn Music High School. In 2006 he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre specialising in composition. He has been a music organizer; from 1995 to 1999 he belonged to the staff of the jazz festival Jazzkaar. From 2005 to 2014 he was one of the artistic directors of the Estonian Music Days. He has also been a member (being a keyboard player or arranger) of several rock and jazz ensembles, e.g. Compromise Blue and Contus Firmus.
