The Draughts World Championship in international draughts is the world championship, which began in 1885 in France; since 1948, it has been organized by the World Draughts Federation (FMJD). The men's championship has had winners from the Netherlands, Canada, the Soviet Union, Senegal, Latvia, and Russia. The championship occurs every two years. Since 1984, a World Title match takes place on every second world championship. The current men's champion is Alexander Schwartzman. *The first seven mentioned championships (with a *) were international tournaments held in France, they are considered world championships because all leading players were presented in the tournaments. International Draughts
International draughts (also called international checkers or Polish draughts) is a Abstract strategy, strategy board game for two players, one of the variants of draughts. The gameboard comprises 10×10 squares in alternating dark and light colours, of which only the 50 dark squares are used. Each player has 20 pieces, light for one player and dark for the other, at opposite sides of the board. In conventional diagrams, the board is displayed with the light pieces at the bottom; in this orientation, the lower-left corner square must be dark. History According to Draughts historians, draughts historian Arie van der Stoep, the 100 square draughts board came into use in the Netherlands between 1550 and 1600, and the number of pieces was extended to 2x20 between 1650 and 1700. Alexander Dybman
Alexander Borisovich Dybman (russian: Александр Борисович Дыбман; born in 1962) is an inactive Soviet International draughts player, two-time World champion (in 1986 and 1987), and four-time Soviet champion in International draughts. At the age of 17, in 1979, Dybman won a bronze medal at the Soviet championship, and in 1980 he shared a second place at the Soviet championship with the former World champion, Vyacheslav Shchyogolev. In 1980 and 1981, Dybman won silver medals at the World junior championships–first in a tournament (with Alexander Baljakin taking the first place), and then after losing in the final barrage to another young Soviet player, Vadim Virny. Jannes Van Der Wal
Jannes van der Wal (November 12, 1956 in Driezum – September 24, 1996 in Groningen) was a Dutch/ Frisian draughts player and world champion in the game. He also played chess at a nearly competitive level. Career He became world champion in São Paulo in 1982. After that he garnered attention for his humorous or even eccentric personality. His interviews on Dutch TV were unusual involving a full minute where he did not talk or others where he reacted oddly on being asked how old he was. After this he became a minor celebrity appearing in a few programs on Dutch television. He was also the subject of a 1999 documentary titled Jannes.' He is believed to have held the record on simultaneous play as he played against 225 players on July 16, 1987. He won against 93% of the 225 opponents with 14 games being draws and 4 losses. Anatoli Abramovich Gantvarg (russian: Анатолий Абрамович Гантварг; born 3 October 1948 in Minsk) is an international grandmaster in international draughts from Belarus. Harm Wiersma (born 13 May 1953 in Leeuwarden, Dutch Frisia) is a Dutch draughts player and former politician. He is a six-time world champion in draughts and former MP. Biography In draughts he won his first Dutch championship in 1972, but had been known in the field since age 14. His first world champion title took place in 1976 and his last occurred in 1984. Ton Sijbrands
Teunis (Ton) Sijbrands (born 15 December 1949, in Amsterdam) is a Dutch international draughts player who became world champion in 1972. The next year, he successfully defended his title in a match against Andris Andreiko. In 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1988 he was the national Dutch champion. Sijbrands also had a weekly column about draughts in the Dutch national newspaper ''de Volkskrant'' and wrote several books about the game. He also made major achievements in simultaneous blindfold draughts. In 2002 he won 17 games and played 5 draws from a total 22 games, which equals a score of approximately 88%. On 18 December 2004, in the Dutch village of Lutten, Sijbrands improved the world record for blindfold simultaneous draughts. In this attempt that lasted 24 hours, he won 20 out of 24 games; the other 4 were draws, which equals a score of about 92%. Andris Andreiko
Andris Andreiko (17 October 1942 – 10 March 1976) was a three-time (1968, 1969, 1972) world champion and European champion (1974) in draughts. He also won eight national titles in 1961, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970–1972, 1975. Death Andreiko was an alcoholic, and met Igor Vasenin during an afternoon of drinking. After the two had a drink in Andreiko's apartment, Andreiko fell asleep. Noticing his prize money and luxury appliances, Vasenin decided to kill Andreiko. He wrapped an iron with a towel, hit Andreiko over the head 17 times, collected what he wanted and headed for the door. Incidentally, Andreiko's wife Lyubov, who did not live with him anymore, arrived at his apartment shortly after his murder. Vasenin answered the door and told her that Andreiko was meeting a woman and had asked not to be disturbed, but Lyubov suspected wrongdoing and went to a neighbor's apartment to call the police. ''Baba Sy'' was an African international draughts player and the first world champion from Africa. He is said to have been "discovered" by an American player visiting Dakar in 1959. In 1962 Germany organized a "big game/party", he was the only Senegalese and only African. He played against 150 players simultaneously spending few seconds per table. Several champions are part of the "big game/party" and he is declared the winner. By some accounts he is said to have beat each of the 150 players, in other accounts the results were 122 wins, 33 draws, and 5 loses. In either case, a remarkable achievement. Iser Kuperman
Iser Kuperman, sometimes spelled Koeperman, (russian: Исер Иосифович Куперман; April 21, 1922 - March 6, 2006) was a player of international draughts from the USSR. He had been the seven-time world champion, the four-time Panamerican champion, and multiple USSR champion in international and Russian draughts. He was also an International Grandmaster. Career Iser Kuperman was born in Habne, Ukrainian SSR (now Poliske, Kiev Oblast) on April 21, 1922 to a Jewish family. In 1945, he made his debut in the USSR Russian draughts championship and won first place. After that, Kuperman took first place three times. Then he began to play in international draughts and was USSR champion five times. Iser Kuperman was world champion in 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1974.
