This is a list in alphabetical order of first-class cricketers who have played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club as team captain. Each captain's term of office is given in brackets after his name. Some captains had more than one term and there were seasons in which more than one player held the captaincy. The main sources are Roy Webber's ''Playfair Book of Cricket Records'' to 1950 and the relevant edition of '' Playfair Cricket Annual'' from 1951 to the present with further verification available on the player's ''CricketArchive'' profile. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Robin Buckston
Robin Henry Rowland Buckston (10 October 1908 – 16 May 1967) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1928 and 1939 and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1929 and 1930. He captained the Derbyshire team between 1937 and 1939. Buckston was born in Kensington, the son of George Moreton Buckston who had played for and captained Derbyshire before and after World War I. He was educated at Eton and played in the Eton XI as a wicketkeeper. He first played for Derbyshire at the age of 19 in the 1928 season as wicketkeeper in a match against Lancashire, but did not play for them again until 1937. He played two matches for MCC against Wales in 1929 and 1930 and a game for the Free Foresters against the Netherlands in 1931. Gilbert Hodgkinson
Gilbert Frank Hodgkinson (19 February 1913 — 7 January 1987) was an English cricket Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. Hodgkinson was born at Derby, the second son in a family of six children, and educated at Derby School. He ran a family grocery business "Austin Hodgkinson", having as a result little time to spare for the sport. Samuel Hill-Wood
Sir Samuel Hill Hill-Wood, 1st Baronet (21 March 1872 – 4 January 1949) was a British businessman, Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician, cricketer and association football, football club chairman. Early life Wood was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, the son of Samuel Wood, a cotton manufacturer and his wife Annie. His father made his fortune in the cotton industry in Derbyshire during the late 19th century. Samuel Hill Wood was educated at Eton College and was a keen sportsman. He continued to run the cotton business. Cricket career Wood made his cricket debut for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire in the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1894, 1894 season, and became their captain in the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1899, 1899 season for three seasons. Edward Gothard
Edward James Gothard OBE, MBE, TD (1 October 1904 – 17 January 1979) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1947 and 1948 and captained the side in both years. Gothard was born in Burton-on-Trent, the son of William Henry Gothard who played cricket for Staffordshire. Gothard himself represented Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Championship in 1927. He was an able rugby player but as a result of injury took to playing hockey instead. He was captain of Burton Hockey Club from 1933 to 1939. During the Second World War he played four cricket matches for Nottinghamshire in 1943. He was captain of Burton Hockey Club again from 1946 to 1947, and was a regular player for the club after the war. He played hockey for Derbyshire 30 times and was a trialist for the "Midlands". Billy Godleman
Billy Ashley Godleman (born 11 February 1989) is an English first-class cricketer who plays for Derbyshire. He is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm leg-spin bowler who played for Middlesex and Essex before joining Derbyshire in 2013. He served as the club captain (2016-2023) before he was replaced by Leus du Plooy. Godleman previously represented the England under-19 team. Early life Godleman was raised in Islington where he attended Islington Green School. His father is a London cab driver. During 2004, Godleman was named Bunbury Under-15 player of the year. David English rated him as the best English Under-15 batsman for at least 10 years, and said that he would put money on Godleman playing Test cricket for the England cricket team. Sydney Evershed
Sir Sydney Herbert Evershed (13 January 1861 – 7 March 1937) was an English brewer and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1901 and was a long-serving club captain from 1891 to 1898. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. He was educated at Clifton College where he was in the School XI and XV. Evershed played cricket for Burton on Trent and for Staffordshire in 1878s. His Derbyshire career began in 1880 and he appeared in a Gentlemen of Derbyshire team during the 1880 season, in which he made 85 in the first innings before being bowled. Three days later he made his first appearance for Derbyshire against Yorkshire, though he was out for a duck in his first innings. Leus Du Plooy
Jacobus Leus du Plooy (born 12 January 1995) is a Hungarian-South African first-class cricketer who plays for Derbyshire. He was included in the Free State squad for the 2016 Africa T20 Cup. In August 2017, he was named in Benoni Zalmi's squad for the first season of the T20 Global League. However, in October 2017, Cricket South Africa initially postponed the tournament until November 2018, with it being cancelled soon after. In September 2018, he was named in Northerns' squad for the 2018 Africa T20 Cup. He was the leading run-scorer for Northerns in the tournament, with 145 runs in four matches. He was also the leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge, with 593 runs in eleven matches, and the leading run-scorer for Northerns in the 2018–19 CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup, with 647 runs in eleven matches. Ludford Docker
Ludford Charles Docker (26 November 1860 – 1 August 1940) was a businessman and an English cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1886, captaining the side in 1884, and for Warwickshire in 1894 and 1895. Early life Docker was born in Smethwick, Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Docker and his wife Sarah Sankey. His father was a solicitor in practice at Birmingham and Smethwick who took on a large number of public appointments. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Cricket career Docker played cricket for Birmingham and Kidderminster in 1879 and also played for Derbyshire Colts in the 1879 season. His first-class debut was for Derbyshire in the 1881 season. Rikki Clarke
Rikki Clarke (born 29 September 1981) is a retired English cricketer, who last played for Surrey. He was educated at Broadwater School and then Godalming College. Clarke began his career as a professional cricketer with Surrey in 2000, making his list A debut in 2001 and First Class debut in 2002, and the following year made his One Day International debut for England; later in 2003 he played his first Test match. Between 2003 and 2006 he played two Tests, both against Bangladesh and 20 ODIs. At the end of 2007 Clarke left Surrey to become Derbyshire's club captain after feeling a change was needed, hoping he could impress the England selectors with his leadership. William Chatterton
William Chatterton (27 December 1861 – 19 March 1913) was an English cricketer and footballer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1902 and for England on their tour of South Africa in 1891–92. He captained Derbyshire between 1887 and 1889 and scored over 10,000 runs in his first-class career as well as taking over 200 wickets. He played football for Derby County, being one of 19 sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Life Chatterton was born at Thornsett, Birch Vale, Derbyshire, the son of David Chatterton, a cotton mill fireman, and his wife Hannah.
