Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda () is the third-largest island (after Tortola and Anegada) and second-most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Geography Located at about 18 degrees, 48 minutes North, and 64 degrees, 30 minutes West, it covers an area of about . The main commercial and residential area is Spanish Town on the southwestern part of the island. An unusual geologic formation known as "the Baths" located on the southern end of the island makes Virgin Gorda one of the BVI's major tourist destinations. At the Baths, in spite of evidence of the island's largely volcanic origins, huge granite boulders lie in piles on the beach, forming scenic grottoes that are open to the sea. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock, thus not volcanic. It did form from magma, however, at great depth. West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sun sets on the Earth. Long Look Estate
The Long Look Estate in East End, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, claims to be the oldest free black community in the Western world. History In 1776 Samuel Nottingham, a Quaker, manumitted 25 slaves and gave them of land in Long Look in Tortola, directing them to cultivate it for the common good. Quakers were prominent in the abolition movement; Nottingham's action pre-dates the foundation of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade by more than a decade. A report made in 1823 by a John Dougan states "So quiet and retired had these Persons lived there, that although I have been for many years residing in the Island, yet I derived no knowledge of the Situation and Circumstances regarding these People..." Anegada
Anegada is the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a group of islands that form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. It lies approximately north of Virgin Gorda. Anegada is the only inhabited British Virgin Island formed from coral and limestone, rather than being of volcanic origin. While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada is flat and low. Its highest point is only about above sea level, earning it its name, which is the Spanish term for the flooded land, "tierra anegada". At about 15 square miles (38 square kilometers), Anegada is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands, but it is also the most sparsely populated of the main islands, with a population of 285 as at the 2010 Census. The Settlement, British Virgin Islands
The Settlement is the main and only town on Anegada in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The town The Settlement lies near Lower Bay at the southeastern part of the island and has about 200 inhabitants. The coordinates are . The center of this very small town, often also called "the Village", consists of the area along the main road. Besides the Government Administration Building, a small medical clinic, a post office, a police building and a library there also are a few restaurants, hotels, and a few small stores. On the outskirts can be found the Walls, a farming area circled by old stone walls. The enclosed fields were used to grow bananas, maize, sweet potatoes and other crops.
