Anegada
Anegada is the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a group of islands that form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. It lies approximately north of Virgin Gorda. Anegada is the only inhabited British Virgin Island formed from coral and limestone, rather than being of volcanic origin. While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada is flat and low. Its highest point is only about above sea level, earning it its name, which is the Spanish term for the flooded land, "tierra anegada". At about 15 square miles (38 square kilometers), Anegada is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands, but it is also the most sparsely populated of the main islands, with a population of 285 as at the 2010 Census. The Settlement (BVI)
The Settlement is the main and only town on Anegada in the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The town The Settlement lies near Lower Bay at the southeastern part of the island and has about 200 inhabitants. The coordinates are . The center of this very small town, often also called "the Village", consists of the area along the main road. Besides the Government Administration Building, a small medical clinic, a post office, a police building and a library there also are a few restaurants, hotels, and a few small stores. On the outskirts can be found the Walls, a farming area circled by old stone walls. The enclosed fields were used to grow bananas, maize, sweet potatoes and other crops. There is also the Iguana Headstart Facility, a breeding farm for iguanas, mainly the Anegada Ground Iguana (or Anegada rock iguana, "Cyclura pinguis"). HMS Astraea (1781)
HMS ''Astraea'' (or ''Astrea'') was a 32-gun fifth rate of the Royal Navy. Fabian at E. Cowes launched her in 1781, and she saw action in the American War of Independence as well as during the Napoleonic Wars. She is best known for her capture of the larger in a battle on 10 April 1795, while under the command of Captain Lord Henry Paulet. She was wrecked on 23 March 1808 off the coast of Anegada in the British Virgin Islands. Capture of ''South Carolina'' Captain Matthew Squire commissioned ''Astraea'' in July 1781. St Phillip's Church, Tortola
St. Phillip's Anglican Church, also known as the African Church, in the Kingstown area of Tortola in British Virgin Islands, was built in 1840 by a community of Africans who had been liberated from illegal slave ships. By the early 21st century, the building had fallen into disrepair, as it had not been regularly used for decades. Efforts to stabilize the remains are underway; it is a unique historic site in the islands. Local historians claim it is the oldest free black church building to survive in the Americas. Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda () is the third-largest island (after Tortola and Anegada) and second-most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Geography Located at about 18 degrees, 48 minutes North, and 64 degrees, 30 minutes West, it covers an area of about . The main commercial and residential area is Spanish Town on the southwestern part of the island.
