Boskamp, Suriname
Boskamp is a town on the East-West Link in Suriname, in the central north of the country, in the Calcutta resort of the Saramacca District. It lies opposite to Jenny, to which it is connected via the Coppename bridge. Boskamp is mainly a fishing village. In the 1940s the Coronie District was released from its isolation when the Samaraccaweg was extended to Boskamp. In 1999, the ferry was replaced with the Coppename bridge. In 1990, a fishing station was opened with Belgian aid. In 2016, a health care centre was opened in Boskamp. Groningen, Suriname
Groningen is the capital town of the Saramacca District, Suriname. Groningen only began to grow after 1960. Around that time the East-West Link, a road linking Albina via Paramaribo to Nieuw Nickerie was built. This let Groningen become accessible by road. The town features: an office of the district commissioner; a post office; an office for the police commander, an office of the State health foundation(SZF) and the J. Eliazer football stadium, named after the founder of the Football Federation of Saramacca and president. There is also a Moravian Church and a Roman Catholic church. In 1910, a nursing home for yaws sufferers was established. It was closed after it was discovered that the disease could be cured within days by applying Salvarsan. Goddo is a small village in Suriname. The village sits on the Upper Suriname River, 1.81 kilometres north of the Pikin River. Goddo can be reached via the Djumu Airstrip, or by boat from Pokigron. Donderskamp
Donderskamp (Kalina: Konomerume) is an indigenous village of Kalina Amerindians in the resort of Boven Coppename in the Sipaliwini District in Suriname. The village is located on the Wayambo River. History The origin of the name is unclear. It may refer to Peter Donders who, in 1868, was the first missionary active among the Wayambo-indians, or it may simply refer to "thunder". The village has a school, a clinic, and is home to a holiday resort. The main source of income for the village is growing arrowleaf elephant ear for pom, a popular dish in Suriname. The Kalina language used to be spoken by the tribe, however as of 2014, it is only spoken by the elderly, and Sranan Tongo and Dutch have become the main languages. Djumu, also spelled Djoemoe, is a village in Suriname. It is located at the confluence of the Gran Rio and the Pikin Rio which continue as the Upper Suriname River. The village is home to Maroons of the Saramaka tribe. Cottica
Cottica Lawa (often called Cottica) is a village in the district of Sipaliwini, Suriname. It is located in the east, along the Marowijne River and the border with French Guiana. The village has a school, and a clinic. History During the 18th century, the Aluku people settled in Cottica. Boni became a major leader and conducted raids against Dutch plantations. Resulting intermittent warfare with Dutch militia, military and mercenaries, between 1768 and 1793, resulted in many Aluku seeking refuge in Papaïchton and other villages on the French side of the Marowijne River. On 25 May 1891, the Aluku people opted for French citizenship. The village of Cottica was resettled in 1902, and is the only settlement in Suriname. The village is not under the authority of the ''granman'' of the Aluku. Corneliskondre
Corneliskondre is a village in Suriname, located in the Boven Coppename resort of Sipaliwini District. It has a population of 70 as of 2020, and is inhabited by indigenous people of the Kalina tribe. Corneliskondre has been named after Cornelis Tapopi, the chief who founded the village. Catholic missionaries first visited the village in 1883. Cassipora
Cassipora is an indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians in the resort of Carolina in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located near the Blaka Watra recreation area. It is also near a 17th-century Jewish village, however only the cemetery remains. History Cassipora is located near a former Jewish settlement which was established in 1665, and abandoned twenty years later in favour of neighbouring Jodensavanne. During the 19th century, the wood plantation Salem was located at the site. The village contains small clusters of houses occupied by one family which are spaced far apart. Cassipora is connected to the water supply, and since 2016, to the electricity grid. The village has mobile phone access. For schooling and health care, it is depended on neighbouring Redi Doti, which can be reached by an unpaved road. There is a conflict with logging companies who also use the road. Cabendadorp (also ''Kabenda dorp'') is an indigenous village of Kalina Amerindians in the resort of Zuid in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located on the Afobakaweg south of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport. History The village was founded in 1974 by Joseph Cabenda who served as village chief until his death in 2012. Brownsweg
Brownsweg is a town and resort in Suriname in the Brokopondo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 4,793. History The town was named after the road that leads to the Brownsberg, and the Brownsberg Nature Park. It is situated near the Brokopondo Reservoir. In 1958 Brownsweg was built for the inhabitants of the area that was flooded after the construction of the Afobaka Dam. One of the main concerns was the transmigration of the 5,000 people living in the area. Bronsweg was a stop at the former Lawa Railway, and in 1959 the Prinses Marijke camp was built near the hamlet. The resort consists of the villages Wakibasoe 1, 2, 3, Bierhoedoematoe, Kadjoe, Nieuw Ganze, Djankakondre, Makambi, and Nieuw-Koffiekamp.
