CenturyLink operating companies consist of operations inherited from various predecessor companies, which is reflected in the differing names of the companies and partially overlapping service territories; all operating companies do business as CenturyLink. CenturyTel of Chester, Inc. is a telephone operating company owned by CenturyLink that provides local telephone service in Chester, Iowa and areas of Minnesota directly north. The company was established in 1961 as the Chester Telephone Company. The company was acquired by Century Telephone and changed its corporate name to Century Telephone Company of Chester, Inc. in 1995. In 1998, Century Telephone shortened its name to CenturyTel and the Ohio company changed its corporate name to CenturyTel of Chester, Inc., a name it retains today. Pacific Telecom, Inc., originally Telephone Utilities, Inc. and now CenturyTel of the Northwest, Inc., was an independent telephone company that owned over 600,000 telephone lines in 12 states prior to its acquisition by CenturyTel. History PTI started as a holding company for Ilwaco Telephone and Telegraph. Norman Howerton sought to upgrade the telephone equipment that Ilwaco Telephone had been using. To build capital, he organized Telephone Utilities to attract investors and modernize his telephone network. As customers began to join IT&T, the company began to expand. History Brightspeed of Missouri was established as CenturyTel of Missouri, LLC on 10/17/2001 upon CenturyTel's purchase of lines from Verizon Communications. Qwest Corporation is a former Regional Bell Operating Company owned by Lumen Technologies. It was formerly named U S WEST Communications, Inc. from 1991 to 2000, and also formerly named Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company from 1911 to 1991.
