Sikhs ( or ; pa, ਸਿੱਖ, ' ) are people who adhere to Sikhism, Sikhism (Sikhi), a Monotheism, monotheistic religion that originated in the late 15th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, based on the revelation of Guru Nanak. The term ''Sikh'' has its origin in the word ' (), meaning 'disciple' or 'student'. Male Sikhs generally have ''Singh'' ('lion'/'tiger') as their last name, though not all Singhs are necessarily Sikhs; likewise, female Sikhs have ''Kaur'' ('princess') as their last name. These unique last names were given by the Gurus to allow Sikhs to stand out and also as an act of defiance to India's caste system, which the Gurus were always against. Kulveer Singh Ranger (Punjabi: ਕਲਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਰੇਂਜਰ) (born 1975) is an English strategy and communications executive and TechUK board member. Career Ranger became a well known name after he was head hunted to become the Director for Transport Policy by Boris Johnson after Johnson won the Mayoral election in May 2008. His previous experience in implementing the Oyster card system for London was key in him becoming selected by Johnson. In 2011, Ranger became the Director for Environment and Digital London and his work resulted in a record fall in bike thefts in addition to a number of new electric car charging points in London to encourage a higher take up of electric vehicles. Karamjit Singh (electoral Commissioner)
Karamjit Sukhminder Singh ( Punjabi: ਕਰਮਜੀਤ ਸੁਖਮਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ, born 1950) is a British public servant. He was a member of the United Kingdom's Electoral Commission from 2001 to 2010, and the Social Fund Commissioner for Great Britain from 2009 to 2013 and for Northern Ireland from 2009 to 2015. Kamel Hothi, OBE (Punjabi: ਕਮਲ ਹੋਥੀ) (born in 1962 in India) is a British banker and financial adviser. Career Hothi has worked at Lloyds Bank since about 1979. Kamel became TSB's first female manager in the South-east and the bank's first Asian manager. She is ranked in the top 100 most influential black, Asian and minority ethnic leaders in the UK. Jasvinder "Jaz" Rai OBE ( Punjabi:: ਜਸਵਿੰਦਰ ਰਾਏ, born in Derby) is a British Aerospace engineer, community leader and chairperson of the Sikh Recovery Network which supports people with alcohol and drug addictions. He regularly talks about addiction and other issues of importance to the Sikh community in the media and in 2020, was recognised by 10 Downing Street for his work supporting people with drug and alcohol addiction. Sir Harpal Singh Kumar (born 1965) is a British medical researcher of Indian descent, who was the chief executive officer of Cancer Research UK until June 2018, when he left the charity to become Head of Johnson & Johnson Innovation EMEA. Dabinderjit Singh Sidhu ( Punjabi: ਦਬਿੰਦਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਿੱਧੂ) was a Director at the National Audit Office (United Kingdom) who retired early in May 2022 after more than 33 years.
