People's Party (United States)
The People's Party, also known as the Populist Party or simply the Populists, was a left-wing Agrarianism, agrarian populist political party in the United States in the late 19th century. The Populist Party emerged in the early 1890s as an important force in the Southern and Western United States, but collapsed after it nominated Democratic Party (United States), Democrat William Jennings Bryan in the 1896 United States presidential election. List Of African-American Newspapers In Montana
This is a list of African-American newspapers that have been published in the state of Montana. Montana's first such newspaper was '' The Colored Citizen'', published in Helena in the fall of 1894. During this period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the African-American population of Montana fluctuated between 1000 and 1500 people. Montana has the unique position of being entirely surrounded by states (Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota) that have never had an African-American newspaper. The state's early Black press accordingly covered a particularly wide geographic sweep, and many of Montana's early African American papers carried news from communities in other Western states. Some other states' newspapers returned the favor: the Seattle '' Northwest Enterprise'' ran a column of Montana news from the 1920s to 1960s. Vancouver is a city on the north bank of the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington, located in Clark County. ''The Forum'' was an African-American owned newspaper founded by John Henry Ryan and Ella Ryan and published by the Graham–Hickman Company weekly from 1903 to 1918 covering the Tacoma area of the U.S. state of Washington. It was founded on July 3, 1903 and ceased publication on December 28, 1918. While the second page of the paper contained black society news, the paper covered mostly local politics and had mainly white readers and advertisers. ''The New Age'', later known as the ''Portland New Age'', was the first African-American newspaper published in the U.S. state of Oregon. History Adolphus D. Griffin, or A.D. Griffin, launched the weekly newspaper in 1896. Griffin, served various occupational roles throughout his life, which included editor, publisher, politician, entrepreneur, and even custodian. He was known as a "political leader of the colored people of the Willamette Valley," Shortly after the New Age's initial launch, Griffin offered to circulate it to Portland's black residents for free. The city's black population, which numbered fewer than 800 on the paper's launch date, were highly literate in comparison to southern blacks of the time, and to Oregon's white laboring class.
