A list of stories published in the IPC weekly boys' comic ''Action'' between 1976 and 1977. Despite his worsening condition he fights on to the delight of his followers but eventually loses his eyesight and moves into the music industry in an attempt to raise money for an experimental operation to restore his vision. *Wagner would later admit Muhammad Ali was the main inspiration for the strip, though he made Barron less cocky, and he was proud to "help redress the balance" at a time when British comics rarely featured minorities in positive roles. IPC Magazines
TI Media (formerly International Publishing Company, IPC Magazines Ltd, IPC Media and Time Inc. Heavyweight is a weight class in combat sports and professional wrestling. Convoy (song)
"Convoy" is a 1975 novelty song performed by C. W. McCall (a character co-created and voiced by Bill Fries, along with Chip Davis) that became a number-one song on both the country and pop charts in the US and is listed 98th among ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. Written by McCall and Chip Davis, the song spent six weeks at number one on the country charts and one week at number one on the pop charts. The song went to number one in Canada as well, hitting the top of the ''RPM'' Top Singles Chart on January 24, 1976. "Convoy" also peaked at number two in the UK. The song capitalized on the fad for citizens band (CB) radio. The song was the inspiration for the 1978 Sam Peckinpah film ''Convoy'', for which McCall rerecorded the song to fit the film's storyline. Commandos (United Kingdom)
The Commandos, also known as the British Commandos, were formed during the Second World War in June 1940, following a request from Winston Churchill, for special forces that could carry out raids against German-occupied Europe. Initially drawn from within the British Army from soldiers who volunteered for the Special Service Brigade, the Commandos' ranks would eventually be filled by members of all branches of the British Armed Forces and a number of foreign volunteers from German-occupied countries. Jesús Blasco
Jesús Blasco (3 November 1919 – 21 October 1995) was a Spanish author and artist of comic books, whose career covered most of the conventional history of comic strips. He worked extensively in British comics in the 1960s and 1970s. Career Blasco debuted in 1935 in the Spanish magazine ''Mickey'', at the age of fifteen. For the magazine ''Boliche'', however, he created the series and character named '' Cuto'' (translation: ''Cutter''). Originally a strip in the vein of Percy Crosby's Skippy, the character became a globe trotting and time-travelling boy adventurer, casually handling firearms and hot wiring sportscars, and romancing adult women. Jordi Badía Romero
Jordi Badía Romero (11 November 1938 – 23 February 1984), also known as Jobaro, Jorge or Jorge B. Gálvez, was a Spanish comic artist. He began his career in the 1950s, illustrating Spanish adventure and romance stories, often working with his brother, Enrique Badía Romero; they signed their joint work "Hnos. Badía" (Badía Brothers). In the 1960s and '70s he worked for British comics companies Fleetway Publications and DC Thomson, including girls' comics ''Misty'' and '' Spellbound'', illustrating ''Supercats'' for the latter. Ricardo Villagrán
Ricardo Villagran (born 1938 in Corrientes) is an Argentine illustrator known for his work in the American comic book industry. Biography Early life and education Villagran was born in the small northern city of Corrientes in 1938. Drawing being his all-consuming interest since the age of four, it was considered only reasonable that after high school he attend Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. Villagran began taking freelance art assignments for various advertising companies, printers and comic publishers while still attending college. He even continued to do art assignments during his compulsory service in the Argentine Army. Commercial illustration After his discharge from the military, Villagran began working as a commercial artist and illustrator. His list of clients grew to include the majority of the larger advertising agencies and printing houses in Argentina. Horacio Altuna
Horacio Altuna (born November 24, 1941) is an Argentine comics artist. Biography Altuna was born in Córdoba. He began working in the comics world in 1965 for the publisher Editorial Columbia. His first characters were Titan, a Superman-like superhero, Kabul de Bengala (1971, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Armando Fernández among others), Big Norman, Hilario Corvalán and others. From 1973 to 1976, Altuna collaborated with Fleetway, Ediciones Record, Charlton Comics, ''Playboy'' and the French Les Humanoïdes Associés. Gerry Finley-Day (born 1947, Broughty Ferry, Dundee) is a Scottish comics writer, prolific from the 1960s to the 1980s, best known as the creator of "Rogue Trooper". Career He began his career at D.C. Thomson & Co., before becoming the editor of IPC Media's girls' title '' Tammy'' in 1971, for which he wrote strips such as ''Ella on Easy Street'' and ''The Camp on Candy Island''. Tammy's stories were full of cruelty and adversity, based on research showing that girls wanted stories that made them cry. Finley-Day rose to become deputy managing editor of IPC's girls' comics department, but quit to become a freelance writer.
