Linton Park (artist)
Linton Park (16 November 1826, in Marion Center, Pennsylvania – 17 September 1906,"Linton Park" from the ''Encyclopedia of American Folk Art'', Gerard Wertkin, Editor. in Erie, Pennsylvania) was an American painter in the Folk Art tradition and vegetarian Union Army, union soldier. Biography His father was a surveyor who helped lay out his hometown. As a young man, he probably worked in his father's gristmill, although some of his paintings indicate that he may have worked in the lumber industry as well. After travelling throughout Pennsylvania in the 1850s, the year 1863 found him in Washington, D.C., where he may have worked on the new United States Capitol dome. Marion Center, Pennsylvania
Marion Center is a borough in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 413 at the 2020 census. History The village was laid out by John Park in 1841 and named Marion after the Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion. The ''Indiana Register'' first advertised lots for sale on September 1, 1841. Marion became incorporated as a borough in June 1869. The post office used a name distinct from the town (Brady Post Office) until December 26, 1890 when both were changed to Marion Center. In 1885, New York banker Adrien Iselin purchased the Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh Railway. A branch near the Jefferson-Indiana County Line (Indiana Junction) led south into Indiana County ending at Vintondale. The tracks from Jefferson County into Indiana County were first laid near Juneau in October 1902. Trains ran through Marion Center by April 1903. Ticking
Ticking is a type of cloth, traditionally a tightly-woven cotton or linen textile. It is traditionally used to cover tick mattresses and bed pillows. The tight weave makes it more durable and hinders the stuffing (straw, chaff, hair, down feathers, etc.) from poking through the fabric. To make it even tighter, ticking could be waxed, soaped, or starched. Tick materials designed to hold foam may be knit, or more porous. In English-speaking countries ticking commonly has a striped design, in muted colors such as brown, grey or blue, and occasionally red or yellow, against a plain, neutral background. Although traditionally used for mattresses and pillows, the material has found other uses, such as serving as a backing for quilts, coverlets, and other bedding.
