Maria Linley
Maria Linley (10 October 1763 – 5 September 1784) was an English singer. Life Maria Linley was born on 10 October 1763 and christened two months later on 10 December, at Bath. She was trained as a singer by her father Thomas Linley the elder (one of seven musical siblings born to him and his wife Mary Johnson). She performed in the Drury Lane oratorios and in concerts, possessing a voice similar to that of other family members. As she matured her behaviour changed, she became awkward and "eccentric", leading to arguments with her father, and she left home to stay with her older sister, Mary. Unhappy at having to sleep in a small attic room, she left her sister's house and moved in with a female friend with whom she shared a bed. When she was twenty years old, in 1784, she went to live in the home of her grandparents in Bath but became very ill soon after her arrival. Maria died on 5 September 1784 from a "brain fever". William Linley
William Linley (1771–1835) was one of seven musical siblings born to Thomas Linley the elder and his wife Mary Johnson. Early life Born in Bath, Somerset, on 27 January 1771 Linley was the youngest child of Thomas Linley and Mary Johnson (1729–1820). Educated at Harrow and then St Paul's School, additional tutoring in musical disciplines was provided by his father and Carl Friedrich Abel. He joined the British East India Company and was in India 1790-1795 and 1800–1805, holding a writership at their College in Madras. He retired from the company in 1810 and devoted himself to singing, composing glees and songs and writing literature. He bequeathed his collection of family portraits to Dulwich Picture Gallery. Tim Linley
Timothy Edward Linley (born 23 March 1982) is a former English cricketer who played primarily for Surrey. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. He was born in Horsforth, Leeds, where he played cricket for Horsforth Cricket Club. Linley went to St. Mary's Catholic High School, Menston. He started his first-class career with Oxford University, for whom he played for two years. The Oxford team at the time included Joe Sayers (with whom Linley went to school and who was at Yorkshire), Michael Munday (Somerset) and Viv Richards' son Mali. Thomas Linley The Younger
Thomas Linley the younger (7 May 17565 August 1778), also known as Thomas Linley Junior or Tom Linley, was the eldest son of the composer Thomas Linley and his wife Mary Johnson. He was one of the most precocious composers and performers that have been known in England. A highly talented violinist, Tom Linley was also the most promising of all native English composers between Purcell and Elgar, combining prodigious talent with a delightful personality. He is sometimes referred to as the "English Mozart". His early promise was cut short when he drowned in a boating accident, aged just 22 years. Thomas Linley The Elder
Thomas Linley (17 January 1733 – 19 November 1795) was an English bass and musician active in Bath, Somerset. Born in Badminton, Gloucestershire, Linley began his musical career after he moved to Bath at age 11 and became apprentice to the organist Thomas Chilcot. After his marriage to Mary Johnson in 1752, Linley at first supported his wife and growing family predominantly as a music teacher. As his children grew and he developed their musical talent, he drew an increasing amount of income from their concerts while also managing the assembly rooms in Bath. When the new Bath Assembly Rooms opened in 1771, Linley became musical director and continued to promote his children's careers. He was eventually able to move to London with the thousands of pounds which he had amassed from their concerts. Edward A. Linley (26 September 1894 – after 1928) was an English professional footballer who made 142 appearances in the Football League playing as an outside left. Linley was born in East Retford, Nottinghamshire. He played football for Kiveton Park and Midland League club Worksop Town before signing for Birmingham in December 1920 for a fee reported as £600. He helped them win the Football League Second Division title in the 1920–21 season and appeared in more than 100 top-flight matches for the club. Samuel Linley
Samuel Linley (1760 – December 1778) was the second son of Thomas Linley the elder and Mary Johnson, one of seven musical siblings born to that couple. Life Samuel Linley was born when the family were living in Bath, Somerset, during 1760; he was baptised on 23 June that year. His first public performance was dancing the hornpipe for a production of '' King John'' in Bristol when he was six years old. He sang in his father's concerts during 1774 and 1775, and played the oboe, an instrument he was probably taught to play by William Herschel. In 1778 he became a midshipman on HMS ''Thunderer'', aboard which he contracted the fever from which he died. The register of his burial is dated 6 December 1778. Emma Hart, who went on to be Lady Hamilton, was employed by the Linley family as a maid servant; she nursed Linley during his illness but was distraught when he died, immediately leaving the house. Mary Linley
Mary Linley (4 January 1758 – 27 July 1787) was one of seven musical siblings born to Thomas Linley the elder and his wife Mary Johnson. She sang publicly until she married the playwright Richard Tickell in 1780. Biography Linley was born in Bath, England, on 4 January 1758. In 1771, she appeared at the Three Choirs Musical Festival at Hereford, and in 1772 at Gloucester, with her sister Elizabeth Ann Linley. On Elizabeth Ann's retirement, Mary Linley filled her place in oratorio and concert rooms. On 25 July 1780, she married Richard Tickell, pamphleteer and commissioner of stamps. She died at Clifton on 27 July 1787, leaving two sons and a daughter, and was buried in Wells Cathedral.
