Maria Linley
Maria Linley (10 October 1763 – 5 September 1784) was an English singer. Life Maria Linley was born on 10 October 1763 and christened two months later on 10 December, at Bath. She was trained as a singer by her father Thomas Linley the elder (one of seven musical siblings born to him and his wife Mary Johnson). She performed in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Drury Lane oratorios and in concerts, possessing a voice similar to that of other family members. As she matured her behaviour changed, she became awkward and "eccentric", leading to arguments with her father, and she left home to stay with her older sister, Mary Linley, Mary. Unhappy at having to sleep in a small attic room, she left her sister's house and moved in with a female friend with whom she shared a bed. When she was twenty years old, in 1784, she went to live in the home of her grandparents in Bath but became very ill soon after her arrival. Maria died on 5 September 1784 from a "brain fever". Thomas Linley The Elder
Thomas Linley (17 January 1733 – 19 November 1795) was an English bass and musician active in Bath, Somerset. Born in Badminton, Gloucestershire, Linley began his musical career after he moved to Bath at age 11 and became apprentice to the organist Thomas Chilcot. After his marriage to Mary Johnson in 1752, Linley at first supported his wife and growing family predominantly as a music teacher. As his children grew and he developed their musical talent, he drew an increasing amount of income from their concerts while also managing the assembly rooms in Bath. When the new Bath Assembly Rooms opened in 1771, Linley became musical director and continued to promote his children's careers. He was eventually able to move to London with the thousands of pounds which he had amassed from their concerts. Mary Linley
Mary Linley (4 January 1758 – 27 July 1787) was one of seven musical siblings born to Thomas Linley the elder and his wife Mary Johnson. She sang publicly until she married the playwright Richard Tickell in 1780. Biography Linley was born in Bath, England, on 4 January 1758. In 1771, she appeared at the Three Choirs Musical Festival at Hereford, and in 1772 at Gloucester, with her sister Elizabeth Ann Linley. On Elizabeth Ann's retirement, Mary Linley filled her place in oratorio and concert rooms. On 25 July 1780, she married Richard Tickell, pamphleteer and commissioner of stamps. She died at Clifton on 27 July 1787, leaving two sons and a daughter, and was buried in Wells Cathedral. Samuel Shelley (1750/56–22 December 1808) was an English miniaturist and watercolour painter. Largely self-educated, Samuel Shelley was a leading miniaturist, i.e., painter of portrait miniatures, of his time, ranking with Cosway, Smart, and Crosse. In addition to his portraits, he also painted in water-colours fancy figures and compositions from Shakespeare, Tasso, and other poets.
