Lingfield, Surrey
Lingfield is a village and civil parish in the Tandridge district of Surrey, England, approximately south of London. Several buildings date from the Tudor period and the timber-frame medieval church is Grade I listed. The stone cage or old gaol, constructed in 1773, was last used in 1882 to hold a poacher. Lingfield Park Racecourse is to the south of the village. In addition to turf racing on the flat and over jumps, there is also an all-weather course. History The village lay within the Anglo-Saxon administrative division of Tandridge hundred. Lingfield was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, but is shown on the map as ''Leangafeld'', its spelling in 871AD. The southern part of the parish is in the old iron district. Lingfield Park Racecourse
Lingfield Park Racecourse (commonly referred to as Lingfield) is a horse racing course at Lingfield in Surrey, United Kingdom. It is owned by the ARC Racing and Leisure Group, formerly Arena Leisure Plc. Lingfield is best known as a winter all-weather flat-racing course; the track is Polytrack, rather than the usual turf found in the UK. There are only five other all-weather courses in the UK, the others being at Southwell, Kempton, Wolverhampton, Newcastle, and Chelmsford City (formerly Great Leighs Racecourse). Lingfield stages flat racing on turf in the summer and National Hunt races are also run on turf. Lingfield Railway Station adjoins the course, served by trains from London to East Grinstead via Oxted. Lingfield Cricket Club
Representing Lingfield in Surrey, Lingfield Cricket Club was prominent in the 18th century, known to have taken part in important matches between 1739 and 1785. They were especially noted in the mid-1740s. According to surviving records, the club is believed to have used Lingfield Common as its home venue in the 18th century. The club has survived and its team currently plays in the Surrey County League; its home venue is Godstone Road, Lingfield. Matches Lingfield is first recorded in June 1739, playing two matches against London. They won the first, on Monday, 18 June at an unknown venue, by two wickets. Lingfield Railway Station
Lingfield railway station is on the branch of the Oxted line in southern England and serves Lingfield in Surrey. It is from , although off peak trains run to and from . The station is managed by Southern. The station adjoins Lingfield Park Racecourse. History The opening of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's (LBSCR) Oxted Line in 1884 brought the railway to the small agricultural parish of Lingfield which, like its neighbour Dormansland, had been earmarked for residential development. The area was also to be the location of a new racecourse which was to open in 1890. Lingfield originally had only limited facilities to accommodate passengers and freight, and struggled to deal with the crowds which attended the race meetings. Lingfield College
Lingfield College is an independent day school situated in Lingfield in the English county of Surrey, for pupils aged two to eighteen. It was originally a boarding school for girls and became fully co-educational in 1996. As of 2022 there are approximately 940 pupils at the School spread over two sites situated next to one another: the Prep School and the Senior School. The School is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses Conference. History Lingfield College was founded in 1940 by three members of the Roman Catholic School Sisters of Notre Dame as an all-girls school.
