Lindi is a historic southern Tanzanian coastal small city and regional capital of the Lindi Region located at the far end of Lindi Bay, on the Indian Ocean in southeastern Tanzania. The town is south of Dar es Salaam and north of Mtwara, the southernmost coastal town in Tanzania, and gives its name to the surrounding Lindi Region, one of the largest regions in Tanzania and one of most sparsely populated regions of the country. The town is part of Lindi Municipal District. Lindi is home to Lindi Historic Town, a national historic site of Tanzania. The Lindi Airport is northeast of the city. History Lindi Town was founded in the 11th century. There is no record of previous name of the Swahili town. Possibly named after one of the ancestors of local Mwinyi. Lindi Region (''Mkoa wa Lindi'' in Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The region covers an area of . The region is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Sri Lanka. The regional capital is the municipality of Lindi. The Lindi Region borders on Pwani Region, Morogoro Region, Ruvuma Region, and Mtwara Region. The name Lindi is an old Swahili word meaning "hiding pits", a place where Swahili people will hide to defend themselves from hostile invasions. The region is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely; Kilwa Kisiwani and Selous Game Reserve. Lindi Municipal District is one of the eight administrative districts of Lindi Region in Tanzania. The district covers an area of .The district is comparable in size to the land area of the nation state of Sao Tome and Principe. Lindi Bay
Lindi Bay ( Swahili language: ''Ghuba la Lindi)'' is a body of water in located in southern Lindi Region in south east Tanzania. Located in the Indian Ocean, the bay is 11.8km long, 5.9km at its widest and 750m at its shortest. Lukuledi River
The Lukuledi is a river in The United Republic Of Tanzania, south-eastern region of Africa. With a total length of 160 km, it rises from the boundary between the Lindi and Mtwara regions. The Lukuledi runs east-north-eastwards in Lindi Region, emptying into the Indian Ocean near Lindi. It separates the Rondo and Makonde plateaus. In the dry season, its discharge reduces substantially, and only the last 40 km of the river's course are never totally dry. Rondo Plateau
The Rondo Plateau, also known as the Muera Plateau, is a high and extensive massif in the Lindi Region and northern Mtwara Region of southeastern of Tanzania. A portion of the plateau is protected by the Rondo Forest Reserve. It is one of a group of dissected plateaus lying between the Mbwemburu and Lukuledi rivers. It is approximately 60 km inland from Lindi, and is situated 15 km north of the Masasi road. It was revealed as an important biodiversity site in studies conducted since the 1980s. Climate The plateaus rise behind a narrow coastal plain. They receive considerable orographic precipitation, making the plateaus cooler and wetter than the surrounding lowlands. The average annual rainfall is 1088 mm (1951-1979), recorded at the Rondo Forest station.
