Limerick Chamber
Limerick Chamber of Commerce also known as Limerick Chamber, was founded in 1805 Ireland. It is a business representative and lobbying organization that is in business for its 450+ members. The current President is Donnacha Hurley manager of the Absolute Hotel. The Limerick Chamber was formally constituted by Charter on 2 June 1815, the Chamber was incorporated by a Royal Charter by King George III, under the title of ‘the Chamber of Commerce of Limerick'. In 1833, the Chamber moved to its present premises at 96 O'Connell Street. It is one of the five oldest chambers of commerce in Ireland and the UK at the time of its foundation. During the first half of the nineteenth century, the Chamber played a key role in the development of Limerick Harbour and also assumed control over pilotage in the River Shannon and made payments to individuals who salvaged vessels and marked hazards in the Estuary. A chamber of commerce, or board of trade, is a form of business network. For example, a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. Matthew Potter
Matthew Potter is an Irish academic who serves as the current curator of Limerick Museum. He is a published historian with a primary focus on governmental history and is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of History of the University of Limerick. Potter has also focused on discovering links between Limerick the place and limerick the poem. He was educated in the Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town and the Crescent College, Limerick City. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in history from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Potter also graduated with a Master of Arts in museum practice and management from the University of Ulster in 2018. Sharon Slater
Sharon Slater is an Irish historian and author. Her work primarily focuses on the history of Limerick, Ireland using the name Limerick's Life. Following a mentorship from Frank Prendergast she attended the University of Limerick and received an MA in Local History. She is currently Historian-in-Residence at Ormston House. She writes for the Limerick Post. She previously wrote for the Limerick Leader (2018), ''Limerick Life Newspaper'' (2016-2017), ''Limerick Magazine'' (2015-2016). She has appeared as a history expert on television and radio including Creedon's Shannon and Doc on One. In 2018, she was recognised with a mayoral reception, by Councillor Sean Lynch, Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, for her work to promote Limerick's history. She was awarded the National Heritage Hero Award for 2017 from Heritage Council Ireland. Francis Spaight
''Francis Spaight'' was a transport ship in the 19th century, owned by an Irish merchant from Limerick, Ireland. The ship was engaged in trade with North America, such as transporting Irish emigrants to North America and transporting timber on the return trip. ''Francis Spaight'' became infamous for an incident of cannibalism. Final voyage On December 3, 1835, the ship broached to off the coast of Canada in a snow storm, washing away all the provisions and fouling the water stores. Of the 18 crewmen, three were thrown overboard during the accident and 15 survived, including four young crewmen in their teens. James Spaight (MP)
Sir James Spaight (1818 – 21 January 1892) was an Irish Conservative politician. Family Spaight was the second son of Francis Spaight — the owner of the ill-fated Francis Spaight ship - and Agnes Paterson, daughter of James Campbell Paterson. He married Elizabeth Alason Eckford, daughter of John Eckford, in 1850. He was the President of the Limerick Chamber from 1871–92, his father Francis was President from 1847–61. He was the vice-president of the Limerick Protestant Young Mens Association. Political career He was a subscriber and council member and then, in 1869, president of the Athenaeum. In 1853, he was High Sheriff of Limerick City and later, in 1856, 1877 and 1883, he was Mayor of Limerick. From 1871 to his death, he was president of the Limerick Chamber of Commerce. Alexander William Shaw
Sir Alexander William Shaw (27 October 1847 – 1923) was an Irish bacon manufacturer, one of the founding members of Limerick Boat Club and the founder of Limerick and Lahinch golf clubs. He was born in County Limerick, the second son of John Shaw of Willowbank, bacon merchant. The family firm (W. J. Sir Thomas Henry Cleeve (5 June 1844 – 19 December 1908) was a Canadian-born businessman, domiciled in Ireland, who was elected High Sheriff of Limerick City on three occasions. Ted Russell (Irish Politician)
George Edward Russell (1 April 1912 – 28 November 2004) was an Irish politician and company director. Born into a prosperous Limerick merchant family, Russell was educated first at Crescent College in Limerick and for a short time Mount St Benedict's near Gorey at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Russell first stood for election as a Clann na Poblachta candidate at the 1948 general election but was not elected. He was also an unsuccessful candidate at the 1951 general election and the 1952 Limerick East by-election. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann as an independent Teachta Dála (TD) for the Limerick East constituency at the 1957 general election. He lost his seat at the 1961 general election. Patrick Kennedy (Limerick Politician)
Patrick Kennedy (23 November 1941 – 21 January 2020) was a barrister and Fine Gael politician from Limerick city in Ireland. A member of Limerick City Council, he was first elected Council in 1967 at the age of 29, becoming an Alderman in the process. He was re-elected in subsequent elections before he stood down at the 2014 elections. He was Mayor of Limerick from 1974 to 1975 and from 1985 to 1986. He left Fine Gael in about the year 2000, and at the 2004 and 2009 local elections he was re-elected to the city council as an Independent candidate. He re-joined Fine Gael in September 2009. Limerick ( ; ga, Luimneach ) is a western city in Ireland situated within County Limerick. It is in the province of Munster and is located in the Mid-West which comprises part of the Southern Region.
