Life Is Beautiful (1987 Film)
''La Vie est belle '' / ''Life is Rosy'' is a 1987 musical comedy directed by Mwezé Ngangura and Benoît Lamy. The film revolves around the vibrant music scene of Kinshasa and tells the rags-to-riches story of a poor rural musician played by legendary Congolese musician, Papa Wemba, the “King of Rumba Rock”, who seeks fame in the big city. The film was considered a major turning point in film production in the DRC with its more artistic approach''.'' Unlike many African films of the time that concerned themselves with the effects of colonialism, ''La vie est belle'' celebrates Congolese culture, music and the lives of Kinshasans. Mwezé Ngangura
Mwezé Ngangura (born 7 October 1950) is a film director from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Early years Mwezé Ngangura was born in Bukavu, DRC on 7 October 1950. At the age of twenty he won a scholarship to go to Belgium and study at the Institut des arts de diffusion, graduating in 1975. While a student he made two short films, ''Tamtam-Electronique'' and ''Rhythm and blood''. Returning to Zaire in 1976 he became a lecturer at three colleges in Kinshasa: the National Institute of Arts, Kinshasa, National Institute of Arts (INA), Institute of Science and Information Technologies (ISTI) and Studio-School of the Voice of Zaire (SEVOZA). For ten years Mwezé Ngangura made TV documentaries in Zaire. He made his first documentary, ''Cheri Samba'', in 1980. This is a portrait of a popular young painter from Kinshasa. Biography Pépé Kallé was born Kabasele Yampanya in Kinshasa (then Léopoldville) in the Belgian Congo, but later assumed his pseudonym in hommage to his mentor, Le Grand Kallé. Benoît Lamy (; 19 September 1945 – 15 April 2008) was a Belgian film director, best known for his picture ''Home Sweet Home'' (1973). Biography Lamy was born in Arlon in the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and died in Braine-l'Alleud, Walloon Brabant, Belgium. His film debut ''Home Sweet Home'' starring Claude Jade and Jacques Perrin won a Diploma award at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival. It was also nominated for a Golden Prize award and received 14 international awards from Montréal to Tehran. Along with Gabrielle Borile, their picture ''Combat de fauves'' (1997) won a Golden Bayard award at the Namur International Festival of French-Speaking Film.
