Liam McCarthy (hurler)
Liam McCarthy (born 2 March 1963) is an Irish former hurler. At club level he played with Piltown and was also a member of the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He usually lined out in the forwards. Career McCarthy first came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Piltown club before quickly joining the club's top adult team. He enjoyed his first success in 1981 when Piltown won the County Junior Championship before claiming a second junior title in 1996. McCarthy first appeared on the inter-county scene as part of the Kilkenny team that won the All-Ireland Minor Championship title in 1981. He later won an All-Ireland Under-21 Championship title in 1984 as well as an All-Ireland Junior Championship title. McCarthy's underage successes saw him drafted onto the Kilkenny senior hurling team in 1985, however, injury kept him off the team the following year. Liam McCarthy is a South African-born Irish cricketer, currently playing for Munster Reds in domestic cricket. He plays club cricket for Railway Union where he is the club captain. Domestic career Originally from Johannesburg, McCarthy came to Ireland in 2021 to play for Railway Union. He has Irish heritage through both his great-grandmother and great-grandfather. He was called up to the Munster Reds squad for an Interprovincial T20 round in Comber in September 2021. He made his T20 debut on 17 September against Northern Knights. Liam MacCarthy (1853–1928) was an Irish nationalist, businessman and activist in London; best known for his donation to the Gaelic Athletic Association of a trophy for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, which is called the Liam MacCarthy Cup in his honour. Personal life MacCarthy was born in Southwark, London to Catholic Irish parents who had emigrated from Ballygarvan, County Cork. His father Eoghan MacCarthy was nicknamed ''Capall'', Irish for 'horse' because of his great strength. Liam grew up in a close knit Irish community; he played hurling on Clapham Common and Irish was the first language in the family home. After leaving school he worked as a blacksmith's hammerman and as a railwayman. In 1875, at age 22, he married Alice Padbury in St George's Cathedral, Southwark. The couple had four sons. Liam MacCarthy Cup
The Liam MacCarthy Cup is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the main competition in the prehistoric sport of hurling. Based on the design of a medieval drinking vessel, the trophy was first awarded in 1923 to the winners of the (delayed) 1921 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1990s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1992. The original trophy is on permanent display in the GAA Museum at Croke Park in Dublin. The GAA organises the series of games, which are played during the summer months. The All-Ireland Hurling Final was traditionally played on the first or second Sunday in September at Croke Park in Dublin.
