Liam Donald
Liam Donald (born 23 Jan 1995) is an Australian rower. He is a national champion, a national representative at world championships and was an World Rowing U23 Championships, U23 World Champion. Club and state rowing Donald was educated at St Kevin's College, Melbourne where he took up rowing. His senior club rowing is from the Mercantile Rowing Club in Melbourne. He debuted at state representative level for Victoria in the 2014 youth eight which contested and won the Noel Wilkinson Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the 2014 Australian Rowing Championships. He first rowed in the Victorian men's senior eight contesting the 2017 King's Cup (rowing), King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. He again rowed in the Victorian King's Cup eights of 2018 and 2019 placing second to New South Wales on all three occasions. Mercantile Rowing Club
The Mercantile Rowing Club is based in Melbourne, Australia on the Yarra River. It was founded in 1880 and has occupied its current site since 1885. More than 40 Mercantillians have represented Australia at Olympic Games. Club history A group of sportsmen interested in the advancement of amateur rowing met at Young and Jackson's Hotel on 19 September 1880 and the Mercantile Rowing club was born. William S Boyd was a driving influence and the club's first Captain. The club was initially named The Junior Warehouseman's Rowing Club and then changed its name in 1881. Boats and facilities were borrowed from the Greenlands boatshed next to the Prices Bridge until 1884 when the member's decided to lease land and build their own boatshed at the club's current location. The current boathouse was built in 1973, after a fire destroyed the previous shed on 6 May 1973. King's Cup (rowing)
The King's Cup is Australia's blue riband annual rowing race for men. Since 1878 it has been contested by state representative senior heavyweight men's coxed eights at the annual Australian Interstate Regatta. Since 1973 the Australian Interstate Regatta has been conducted on the final day of the week-long annual Australian Rowing Championships. The King's Cup is the final event of the Australian Championships and the Interstate Regatta. Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. The World Rowing Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). It is a week-long event held at the end of the northern hemisphere summer and in non-Olympic years is the highlight of the international rowing calendar. History The first event was held in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1962. The event then was held every four years until 1974, when it became an annual competition. 2018 World Rowing Championships
The 2018 World Rowing Championships were the World Rowing Championships held at the regatta course in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The event was held from 9 to 16 September. Events held were men and women's open class, lightweight class, and para-rowing. Prior FISA regattas that had been held in Plovdiv include the 1999 and 2012 World Rowing Junior Championships, and the 2011 European Rowing Championships. Mosman Rowing Club is an all-level competitive and recreational rowing club on the North Shore of Sydney. Since 2007 the club's facilities have been wholly located at The Spit in Sydney's Middle Harbour, the northern arm of Port Jackson. Mercantile club history Mosman's red and white hooped racing colours date back to 1873 when the Mercantile Rowing Club was founded on the west side of Sydney's Circular Quay at Dawes Point. A meeting of warehousemen and merchants' clerks had decided to form a second club the second in the colony (after Sydney Rowing Club). Henry Woolnough was the club's first chairman, he had earlier been a committee member at Sydney. Mercantile's first patron was the Governor of the New South Wales, Sir Hercules Robinson. Robert Black (born 25 September 1995) is an Australian rower. He is a national champion, a national representative in sculling and sweep-oared boats and twice an U23 World Champion. Club and state rowing Black was educated at The King's School where he took up rowing in 2008. His senior club rowing is from the Mosman Rowing Club in Sydney. He fell in love with this sport at his school. He stated in an interview, "when I was in year 7 at school and watching my school's first eights race at the Head of The River. That was the day I fell in love with the sport." Junior World Rowing Championships
The World Rowing Junior Championships is an international rowing regatta organized by FISA (the International Rowing Federation). A rower or coxswain shall be classified as a Junior until 31 December of the year in which he reaches the age of 18. After that date, he shall be classified as an Under 23 rower. During Olympic years it is held at the same location as the Senior World Rowing Championships. The first FISA Youth Regatta was held in 1967 and has been held every year since then, being raised to the status of FISA Junior Champs in 1970 and Junior World Champs in 1985. Many European countries send athletes not up to the standard for World Championships to the Coupe de la Jeunesse.
