Slovakia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "Leť tmou" written by Rastislav Dubovský, Petronela Kolevská and Anna Žigová. Slovakia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest seven times, debuting in 1994. It had attempted to debut in 1993, but did not pass through the qualifying round. In the first three finals that Slovakia participated in, it placed no better than 18th, which it achieved in 1996. Because of its poor results, Slovakia was relegated in 1995 and 1997, and eventually withdrew in 1999. The country returned in 2009, although they withdrew again within four years, having failed to qualify for the final every year since their return. The Czech Republic participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "Aven Romale" written by Radoslav "Gipsy" Banga. The song was performed by the group Gipsy.cz, which was internally selected by the Czech broadcaster Česká televize (ČT) to represent the nation at the 2009 contest in Moscow, Russia. "Always" is a song by Azerbaijani singer Aysel Teymurzadeh (performing as Aysel) and Swedish-Iranian singersongwriter Arash Labaf (performing mononymously). It was the entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The song was selected by Ictimai TV (İTV), the Azerbaijani broadcaster, among the 30 songs submitted to the broadcaster in an open call. The song was composed by a group of songwriters including Arash. The video clip for the song was directed by Swedish director and premiered on Ictimai TV on 24 April 2009. Arash Labbaf ( fa, آرش لباف, ; born 23 April 1977) is an Iranian-Swedish singer, entertainer, and producer. He represented Azerbaijan along with Aysel in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, finishing third with the song " Always". Brezno Train Accident
The Brezno train accident was a train accident which occurred close to Brezno, Slovakia, on 21 February 2009, when a train collided with a tourist coach on a level crossing. Twelve people were killed and at least twenty people were injured in the crash. All of the deaths and injuries occurred on the bus, which was pushed for tens of metres by the derailed train. The crash scene is near the popular ski resort of Polomka Bucnik, where the tourists were headed. The crash led to the third national day of mourning in Slovakia's history.
