Brezno Train Accident
The Brezno train accident was a train accident which occurred close to Brezno, Slovakia, on 21 February 2009, when a train collided with a tourist coach on a level crossing. Twelve people were killed and at least twenty people were injured in the crash. All of the deaths and injuries occurred on the bus, which was pushed for tens of metres by the derailed train. The crash scene is near the popular ski resort of Polomka Bucnik, where the tourists were headed. The crash led to the third national day of mourning in Slovakia's history. Accident details The accident occurred on a level crossing near Brezno at approximately 09:00 local time (08:00 UTC), according to the Slovak news agency TASR. Officials say the coach was travelling to the nearby ski resort. Thirty-six people were on the coach – all were from Bánovce nad Bebravou in western Slovakia. Banská Bystrica (, also known by other alternative names) is a middle-sized town in central Slovakia, located on the Hron River in a long and wide valley encircled by the mountain chains of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. 2009 Orissa Train Derailment
On 13 February 2009, a passenger train derailment occurred at 19:45 local time (14:15 UTC) near Jajpur in the eastern state of Odisha, India. Nine people were killed and 150 people were injured in the incident. Twelve carriages belonging to the Howrah– Chennai Coromandel Express are believed to have derailed following the train's departure from Jajapur Keonjhar Road station near Jajapur. The cause of the accident is currently unknown. Derailment Following initial reports that the death toll was 10, two relief trains were dispatched to the scene. Eyewitnesses feared passengers were trapped in two of the derailed carriages. Medical and rescue teams from the Bhubaneswar headquarters of East Coast Railway converged on the scene of the accident and erected emergency lighting to speed up the rescue effort, which had been hampered by the dark. Brezno (; 1927–1948 ''Brezno nad Hronom'', german: Bries or ''Briesen'', hu, Breznóbánya) is a town in central Slovakia with a population of around 21,000.
