Brezno
Brezno (; 1927–1948 ''Brezno nad Hronom'', german: Bries or ''Briesen'', hu, Breznóbánya) is a town in central Slovakia with a population of around 21,000. Geography Brezno is located within the Geomorphological division of Slovakia, Horehronské podolie basin. Brezno lies between the Low Tatras mountain range and the Slovak Ore Mountains, both of which belong to the Inner Western Carpathians. The town is situated on the right bank of the River Hron, which flows through town from the east, in the direction of the city of Banská Bystrica, approximately west. The local climate in the basin is rather cold, with an annual average of and an annual precipitation of . History The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the current town arose from an old Slovak settlement, next to which newly arrived German miners erected a typical market square in the early 13th century. Pavol Habera
Pavol Habera (born Pavel Habera, 12 April 1962, in Brezno, Czechoslovakia), better known as Paľo Habera, is a Slovak singer, musician, composer, and musical actor. He gained popularity in the 1980s as the leader of the rock band TEAM and has since been known through his successful solo career, and most recently as a judge on the television shows '' SuperStar Search Slovakia'' and ''SuperStar'', based on the British music competition television series ''Pop Idol''. Biography Career Habera studied economics at school, but eventually found his specialization in music. Before performing compulsory military service, he sang in the band Tristo hrmených – 300 HR, which also included Andrej Šeban, and later in Burčiak, also with Šeban. After returning from the army, Habera played with the band Avion. In 1988, he joined TEAM, a pop rock band from the city of Martin, whose fame rose with the arrival of their new lead singer. Ivan Bella
Ivan Bella (born 21 May 1964) is a Slovak Air Force officer who became the first Slovak citizen to fly in space. He participated in an eight-day joint Russian-French-Slovak mission to the Mir space station in 1999. Education and military career Bella graduated from military school in 1983 and subsequently graduated from Košice Military Academy in 1987. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Slovak Republic Army as a pilot at the 33rd Air Force Base in Malacky, Slovakia. Spaceflight Bella began training as a ''research cosmonaut'' on 25 March 1998. He completed his training successfully at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in August of the same year. Ján Chalupka
Ján Chalupka (28 October 1791 - 15 July 1871) was a Slovak dramatist, playwright, publicist and Evangelical pastor. Life He was born in Horná Mičiná, into the family of Evangelical pastor Adam Chalupka, and was not the only member who chose literature: his brother Samo Chalupka was also a writer. Chalupka was educated at home, in Ožďany, Levoča, Prešov, Sárospatak and studied in Vienna and Jena. He was a teacher, from 1817 to 1824 a professor at a lyceum in Kežmarok and from 1824 until his death a pastor in Brezno. Works His main contribution into the Slovak literature was in drama. Karol Kuzmány
Karol Kuzmány ( hu, Kuzmány Károly; 16 November 1806 in Brezno – 14 August 1866 in Štubnianske Teplice) was a prominent Slovak Lutheran pastor, writer, and theologian in the Kingdom of Hungary, with a focus on philosophy and aesthetics. He studied at the University of Jena in Germany between 1928 and 1929. He returned to Slovakia after his education and became a chaplain in Banská Bystrica in 1830, later serving as a pastor there and in Zvolen. In 1849 he became professor of practical theology at the University of Vienna and began to publish works on theology. In 1860 he was elected superintendent (an ecclesiastical position equivalent in the Lutheran church to that of bishop), serving the Bratislava superintendency. Slovak Car Registration Plates
Vehicles registered in Slovakia are generally assigned to one of the districts ('' okres'') and since 1997, the licence plate coding ( sk, EČV, evidenčné číslo vozidla) generally consists of seven characters and takes the form XX-NNNLL, where XX is a two letter code corresponding to the district, NNN is three digit number and LL are two letters (assigned alphabetically). Ottó Herman (26 June 1835 – 27 December 1914) was a Hungarian zoologist, ethnographer, archaeologist, and politician; a polymath recognized as a pioneer of Hungarian natural history research. He made numerous studies on Hungarian spiders, birds, and fishes, founded the journal ''Natural History Notebooks'', which became one of the most popular scientific publications of Hungary, and the ornithological journal '' Aquila''. He is called "''the Father of the birds''" in Hungary. He was a member of several learned societies including the Royal Hungarian Society of Natural History, Hungarian Linguistics Society, Hungarian Society of Ethnography and was elected to Hungarian Parliament. Jozef Karika (born November 15, 1978, in Brezno) is a Slovak experimental publicist and writer. He studied history and philosophy at Matej Bel's University in Banská Bystrica. He is the author of the bestseller ''In the shadow of Mafia''. He was awarded the Prize of Literary Fund (''Cena Literárneho fondu''). As a reporter of a regional TV channel based in Ružomberok, he pointed to the case of Slovak Catholic priest Ján Ferenčík, who, despite his wartime admiration for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, was later celebrated by placing a commemorative plaque on the town hall in Ružomberok.
