Lewis-Palmer School District
The Lewis-Palmer School District (LPSD) is a school district in El Paso County, Colorado that serves the Tri-Lakes communities of Monument, Palmer Lake, Woodmoor and select areas of Colorado Springs. Lewis-Palmer School District is home to Colorado's largest public geothermal project, Palmer Ridge High School. The district was "Accredited with Distinction" by the State of Colorado in 2010, recognizing that it is within the top 7% of Colorado school districts. Like many American school systems, LPSD enforces zero-tolerance policies. The Inez Johnson Lewis School in Monument is on the List of Registered Historic Places in Colorado. The Town of Monument is a Home rule town situated at the base of the Rampart Range in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. Monument is one of the three communities that make up the Tri-Lakes area (along with Palmer Lake and Woodmoor). Palmer Lake is a Statutory Town in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,420 at the 2010 census. Palmer Lake was founded by General William Jackson Palmer in 1871 and was incorporated in 1889. Palmer Lake is one of three communities in the Tri-Lakes region between Denver and Colorado Springs. Inez Johnson Lewis School
The Inez Johnson Lewis School, also known as Lewis-Palmer School District #38 Administration Building, is a building in Monument, Colorado. It was designed by architects MacLaren & Hetherington of Colorado Springs and was built in 1920. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The school was deemed historically significant not for its architecture, but as a symbol of "educational developments and advancements" in its county, El Paso County, Colorado. It was one of the first built for purpose of consolidating students from former rural schools so that a higher quality education could be provided. Lewis Palmer High School
Lewis-Palmer High School (LPHS) is a public high school in Monument, Colorado. It is one of only two high schools in the Lewis-Palmer School District 38, the other being Palmer Ridge High School. 2006 Issue The school refused to give its 2006 valedictorian her diploma after she mentioned Jesus Christ in her commencement speech. Corder pursued legal action against the school district. The court ruled against Corder by declaring that the graduation was a school-sponsored event and therefore the school was under the obligation to uphold the constitutional separation between church and state. The court also ruled that the school's policy for graduation speeches was too vague, and thus unconstitutional due to the "chilling effect" that is created by overly broad rules.
