Lewes Road railway station was a railway station in Brighton, East Sussex. It was located on the now closed Kemp Town branch line Kemp Town branch line was a railway line running from Brighton to Kemptown in the UK that operated between 1869 and 1971. It ran from a junction off the Brighton to Lewes line between London Road and Moulsecoomb stations, to Kemp Town railway ... which first opened in 1869. The station opened on 1 September 1873 and was closed to passengers in 1933 but the line remained opened for goods trains until 1971. The layout of the station was quite unusual, as the single track that passed through it had a platform either side of it linked by a footbridge. Entry to the station was via a covered staircase situated next to the first arch of the viaduct across Lewes Road. Kemp Town Branch Line
Kemp Town branch line was a railway line running from Brighton to Kemptown in the UK that operated between 1869 and 1971. It ran from a junction off the Brighton to Lewes line between London Road and Moulsecoomb stations, to Kemp Town railway station. It opened in 1869 and was expensive to construct, requiring a tunnel and a large viaduct. The passenger service declined after 1917 due to tramway competition, and ceased at the end of 1932, but goods trains continued to operate on the line until 1971. For a time during the Second World War the tunnel on the branch was used for night storage of main-line passenger stock, as a precaution against bomb damage from enemy action. Lewes Road, Brighton
Lewes Road is a major road in the English seaside city of Brighton and Hove. It was part of the A27 cross-country trunk route until the Brighton Bypass took this designation in the 1990s; since then it has been designated the A270. The road runs northeastwards from central Brighton through a steep-sided valley, joining the A27 at the city boundary (formerly the borough boundary) and continuing to Lewes, the county town of East Sussex. The road originated in the 18th century as an alternative to the ancient drove road across the South Downs which was much used by fishwives bringing fish caught in Brighton to the market in Lewes. London Road (Brighton) railway station is a railway station located in Round Hill, an inner suburb of Brighton in East Sussex. It is the first intermediate station on the Brighton branch of the East Coastway Line, down the line from station. The station is managed by Southern, who operate all services on the line. Hartington Road Railway Station
Hartington Road Halt railway station was a stop on the Kemp Town branch railway line between Brighton station and Kemp Town, Brighton, East Sussex. It was open only briefly between 1906 and 1911. The line it stood on was closed permanently in 1971 and has now been demolished. History Hartington Road Halt opened on 1 January 1906 with access from both Hartington Road itself and Upper Wellington Road (a cul-de-sac in the Elm Grove district) by means of cinder paths. The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR; known also as the Brighton line, the Brighton Railway or the Brighton) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1922.
