Levstik Award
The Levstik Award ( sl, Levstikova nagrada) is a literary award in Slovenia awarded for achievements in children's literature. It has been bestowed since 1949 by the Mladinska Knjiga Publishing House, making it the first literary award established by a Slovene publishing house after the Second World War. It includes a prize for original works of literature, original illustrations, and non-fiction books for children. Up until 1989 it was awarded annually. Since then it has been awarded biannually. In the prize category for books only books published by the Mladinska Knjiga Publishing House are eligible for entry, but since 1999 the award for lifetime achievements in children's literature is the most prestigious award of its kind in Slovenia. pg. ... Fran Levstik
Fran Levstik (28 September 1831 – 16 November 1887) was a Slovene writer, political activist, playwright and critic. He was one of the most prominent exponents of the Young Slovene political movement. Life and work Levstik was born in 1831 in Dolnje Retje (now part of the municipality of Velike Lašče) in Lower Carniola (then part of the Austrian Empire, today in Slovenia) in a peasant Slovene family. Levstik was the first notable writer of Slovene epic prose. Among his most known works are the short tale '' Martin Krpan From Vrh'' ( sl, Martin Krpan z Vrha), which became a classic work of Slovene literature, and the itinerary '' A Journey from Litija to Čatež'' (), the main objective of which is a literary manifesto. Tone Pavček
Tone Pavček (; 29 September 1928 – 21 October 2011) was one of the most influential Slovene poets, translators, and essayists from the first post-war generation. He published numerous collections of poetry, well received by readers and critics alike. He also translated a number of Russian works into Slovene. Biography Early life Tone Pavček was born on 29 September 1928 at Šentjurij in southeastern Slovenia. He attended the first grade of elementary school in Mirna Peč, but was soon sent to a boarding school in Ljubljana. Neli Kodrič
Neli Kodrič Filipić (born 12 May 1964) is a Slovene children's writer. Her first book ''Lov na zvezde'' (Star Hunting) won her the Levstik Award and all her following books have been popular with young readers. Kodrič was born in Postojna in 1960. Dim Zupan
Dim Zupan (born 19 February 1946) is a Slovene children's writer. He has also published three novels for adult readers. Zupan was born in Ljubljana in 1946. He studied Law at the University of Ljubljana. He published his first children's book in 1991, introducing the characters of Drekec Pekec and Pukec Smukec (Super Pooper and Farty Party) which became very popular with young readers and feature in a further four of his books. He has also published over twenty other books, including three novels and a theatre play. Mojca Osojnik
Mojca Osojnik (born 29 June 1970) is a Slovene painter and illustrator, best known for her children's books illustrations. Osojnik was born in Kranj in 1970. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 1997 and obtained her Master's degree in 2001. From 2001 to 2003 she lived and worked in Los Alamos. She has participated at numerous art exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad. She also works as a children's book illustrator, some of which she has also written herself. Desa Muck (born 29 August 1955) is a Slovenian writer, children's writer and actor. She works as a freelance artist and writes newspaper columns, radio plays, but is best known for her juvenile fiction. Muck was born in Ljubljana in 1955. Anja Štefan (writer)
Anja Štefan is a Slovene writer, poet and story teller. Biography Anja Štefan was born on 2 April 1969 in Šempeter pri Gorici. She studied Slovene and English at the University of Ljubljana and graduated in 1994. After graduation she continued with studies in the field of folkloristics and she obtained her master's degree in 1999. She works as a free-lance writer. She is one of the few Slovenian professional storytellers and the initiator of ''The Slovenian Storytelling Festival'', started in 1998. She explores the Slovenian narrative tradition. As a poet and writer she writes mostly for children; she also retells Slovenian folk and fairytales and translates folk stories from other languages. Andrej Rozman - Roza
Andrej Rozman (a.k.a. Roza, born 25 May 1955) is a Slovene poet, writer, actor, and street theatre producer. He writes poems and creates plays for children and also writes satirical poetry for adults. Life and work Rozman was born in Ljubljana in 1955. He abandoned his study of Slovene language and literature at University of Ljubljana to set up a small theatre group in 1978. In 1980s he co-founded a street theatre group, '' Ana Monró Theatre'' and was its director between 1982 and 1995. Majda Koren
Majda Koren (born 12 March 1960) is a Slovene children's writer and teacher. She also works with the youth programme section of Radiotelevizija Slovenija, the Slovenian national broadcaster. Koren was born in Ljubljana in 1960. She studied at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ljubljana and works as a primary school teacher in Spodnja Šiška. Marlenka Stupica
Marlenka Stupica (, 17 December 1927 – 17 June 2022) was a Slovene children's book illustrator. She illustrated over one hundred books for children and is considered one of the top Slovene illustrators. Life and work Stupica was born as Marlenka Muck in Maribor, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes on 17 December 1927. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, People's Republic of Slovenia, Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, where she graduated in 1950. At that time, she also travelled to numerous European countries. She already illustrated as a student.
