David Sylvian
David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English musician, singer and songwriter who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman and principal songwriter of the band Japan. The band's androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene. Following their break-up, Sylvian embarked on a solo career with his debut album ''Brilliant Trees'' (1984). His solo work has been described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric", and has included collaborations with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson and Fennesz. ''Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters'' is the second solo studio album by Mick Karn, released in February 1987. It peaked at number 89 on the UK Albums Chart. Release and reception After the release of his debut solo album, ''Titles'', Karn wanted to prove that he was a composer and more than just a bass player. Therefore, on ''Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters'', the bass guitar was not largely used. However, he later thought he should have used more on the album and described it as the weakest album he made. The album features two of his former Japan bandmates, David Sylvian and Steve Jansen. Sylvian co-wrote and provided vocals on "Buoy" and "When Love Walks In", two of three songs that feature vocals on the album, along with "Answer" which features a choir and ensemble. Sylvian also provided additional keyboards on "Land". Jansen co-produced the album with Karn, and also wrote "Land". "Buoy" was released as a single in January 1987. Andonis Michaelides (Greek: Αντώνης Μιχαηλίδης; 24 July 1958 – 4 January 2011), better known as Mick Karn, was an English-Cypriot musician and songwriter who rose to fame as the bassist for the art rock/ new wave band Japan. His distinctive fretless bass guitar sound and melodic playing style were a trademark of the band's sound. Early life Karn was born Andonis Michaelides in Nicosia on 24 July 1958. When he was three, his Greek-Cypriot parents moved with him to London, where he was raised. In his youth he began playing mouth organ at the age of seven and violin at the age of eleven, before he took up playing bassoon for the school orchestra. As a bassoon player he performed with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra in a concert in October 1972 which was broadcast by Radio 4. Ryuichi Sakamoto
is a Japanese composer, pianist, singer, record producer and actor who has pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). With his bandmates Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto influenced and pioneered a number of electronic music genres. Sakamoto began his career while at university in the 1970s as a session musician, producer, and arranger. His first major success came in 1978 as co-founder of YMO. He concurrently pursued a solo career, releasing the experimental electronic fusion album '' Thousand Knives'' in 1978. Two years later, he released the album ''B-2 Unit''. It included the track "Riot in Lagos", which was significant in the development of electro and hip hop music. ''Secrets of the Beehive'' is a solo album by British singer-songwriter David Sylvian and it was released on 19 October 1987 (in Europe, UK and America). The album peaked at no.37 in the UK album chart. The album was released in Japan on 21 November 1987. Background The entire album was quickly written in about two inspired weeks shortly after Sylvian's extensive press tour for '' Gone to Earth'', but for the recording Sylvian ran out of budget and was unable to complete the album the way he envisioned it. Although Sylvian said he liked the songs on the album, he described it as a failure because the centerpiece of the album was missing. The missing piece was the song "''Ride''", which was later completed and finally released 2000 on the compilation album "Everything and Nothing". Sylvian said : "''I was crushed when I wasn't able to finish it first time around due to time and budget constraints''."
