Secrets Of The Beehive
''Secrets of the Beehive'' is a solo album by British singer-songwriter David Sylvian and it was released on 19 October 1987 (in Europe, UK and America). The album peaked at no.37 in the UK album chart. The album was released in Japan on 21 November 1987. Background The entire album was quickly written in about two inspired weeks shortly after Sylvian's extensive press tour for '' Gone to Earth'', but for the recording Sylvian ran out of budget and was unable to complete the album the way he envisioned it. Although Sylvian said he liked the songs on the album, he described it as a failure because the centerpiece of the album was missing. The missing piece was the song "''Ride''", which was later completed and finally released 2000 on the compilation album "Everything and Nothing". David Sylvian
David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English musician, singer and songwriter who came to prominence in the late 1970s as frontman and principal songwriter of the band Japan. The band's androgynous look and increasingly electronic sound made them an important influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene. Following their break-up, Sylvian embarked on a solo career with his debut album ''Brilliant Trees'' (1984). His solo work has been described by AllMusic as "far-ranging and esoteric", and has included collaborations with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, Jon Hassell, Bill Nelson and Fennesz. Vaughan Oliver (12 September 1957 – 29 December 2019) was a British graphic designer based in Epsom, Surrey. Oliver was best known for his work with graphic design studios 23 Envelope and v23. Both studios maintained a close relationship with record label 4AD between 1982 and 1998 and gave distinct visual identities for the 4AD releases by many bands, including Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pale Saints, Pixies, and Throwing Muses. John Timperley (sound Engineer)
John Timperley (11 January 1940 – 20 September 2006), was a British audio engineer, who worked on recordings of a number of important musicians and groups from the 1960s to the 1990s. Timperley was influential in the music recording industry in the United Kingdom and other countries. He gained his training at the IBC studies in London in the late 1950s, working with his long time friend, Keith Grant, primarily on classical recordings and the early pop music. He then worked at Ryemuse Studios (later known as Mayfair Studios) where he recorded Cream's first LP and numerous hits in the 1960s. The flugelhorn (), also spelled fluegelhorn, flugel horn, or flügelhorn, is a brass instrument that resembles the trumpet and cornet but has a wider, more conical bore. Like trumpets and cornets, most flugelhorns are pitched in B, though some are in C. Daniel Henry Edward Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English multi-instrumentalist best known as a double bassist. Ryuichi Sakamoto
is a Japanese composer, pianist, singer, record producer and actor who has pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). With his bandmates Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto influenced and pioneered a number of electronic music genres. Sakamoto began his career while at university in the 1970s as a session musician, producer, and arranger. His first major success came in 1978 as co-founder of YMO. He concurrently pursued a solo career, releasing the experimental electronic fusion album '' Thousand Knives'' in 1978. Two years later, he released the album ''B-2 Unit''. "Forbidden Colours" is a 1983 song by David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The song is the vocal version of the theme from the Nagisa Oshima film ''Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.'' It appears on the film's soundtrack album and was released as a single on Virgin Records in 1983 (the second collaborative single release by Sylvian and Sakamoto, following 1982's "Bamboo Houses"). Background The title of the song is taken from Japanese writer Yukio Mishima's 1953 novel ''Forbidden Colors''; although not directly related to the film, both works include exploration of homosexual themes, specifically resistance to desires through faith in God.
