Roller Derby Bordeaux is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Bordeaux in France. Founded in 2009, the league consists of a single team which competes against teams from other leagues. History Founded in the summer of 2009, Bordeaux claims to have been the first roller derby league in France. In July 2010, they played the first flat track bout in France, against Roller Derby Toulouse. They again played Toulouse, and also the Paris Rollergirls, in a tournament the following summer. Women's Flat Track Derby Association
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body for the sport of women's flat track roller derby, and association of leagues around the world. The organization was founded in April 2004 as the United Leagues Coalition (ULC), but was renamed in November 2005. It is registered in Raleigh, North Carolina as a 501(c)(6) business league organization, a type of nonprofit organization. The primary owners, managers, and operators of each member league and of the association are women skaters, although this does not preclude any particular business structure (leagues don't have to be legally incorporated or internally egalitarian). Roller Derby
Roller derby is a roller skating contact sport played by two teams of fifteen members. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly in the United States. Game play consists of a series of short scrimmages (jams) in which both teams designate a jammer (who uniquely wears a star on the helmet) and four blockers to skate counter-clockwise around a track. The jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to hinder the opposing jammer while assisting their own jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Roller Derby Toulouse is a roller derby league based in Toulouse, France. Founded in 2010, the league currently consists of two men's teams, three women's teams and one junior team. The league was founded in February 2010 by Chakk Attakk, following the release of '' Whip It!'' in France (under the title ''Bliss''). Having skating experience, she recruited the first five women through the Roulez Rose website. In mid-2010, six skaters from the league competed against Les Petits Morts de Bordeaux in the first flat track roller derby bout held in France. The 2011 Roller Derby World Cup was an international women's roller derby tournament organized by ''Blood & Thunder'' magazine. Teams of amateur skaters from around the world were fielded to compete for their respective nations. The inaugural 2011 Roller Derby World Cup was hosted by Toronto Roller Derby, and was held December 1 through 4, 2011, at Supply Depot (Toronto), The Bunker at Downsview Park in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice is the program affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In operation from 2009 until early 2019, the Apprentice Program served to onboard new member leagues into the WFTDA. In February 2019, the WFTDA announced it was retiring the program, to be replaced with a new "New Member Program" in the near future.
