Les Cours Mont-Royal is an upscale shopping mall in the city's downtown core of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, which was converted from the former Mount Royal Hotel. Architecture The Mount Royal Hotel was designed by Ross and Macdonald, a prolific architectural firm in Montreal and across Canada. The ten-storey, 1036-room hotel was the largest in the British Empire. It was erected on the former site of the High School of Montreal at 1455 Peel Street. The construction of the Mount Royal Hotel in the Beaux-Arts architectural style was part of a larger trend in what was the largest city in Canada to attract high-class tourists with luxurious edifices. Peel station is a Montreal Metro station in the borough of Ville-Marie in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves the Green Line. The station opened on October 14, 1966, as part of the original network of the Metro. David Ruben Piqtoukun ᑎᕕᑎ ᐱᑐᑯ ᕈᐱᐃᓐ (also known as David Ruben) (born 1950) is an Inuvialuk (Inuit) artist from Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. Career One of 15 children, Piqtoukun lived a traditional Inuit life until he was sent away to residential school at age five. In 1972, his brother Abraham Anghik Ruben introduced him to stone carving. He also studied books on art. He attributes the impetus behind making his work to art patron Dr. Allan Gonor from North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1974. Gonor suggested he use stories Piqtoukun collected in his sculpture. Gonor told Piqtoukun: "When you travel north, collect the stories — and from there, you introduce them into your carvings and then you start learning." Le Centre Sheraton Hotel is a skyscraper hotel in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located at 1201 René Lévesque Boulevard West in downtown Montreal, between Stanley Street and Drummond Street. Le Centre Sheraton has 825 rooms and stands tall with 38 floors. It was built by Arcop and was completed in 1982. History The hotel was planned to open in time for the 1976 Olympics as the world's largest Holiday Inn. However, the project suffered from cost overruns to the tune of $81 million. Construction took eight years and a different hotel chain opened the building. The mayor of Montreal officially opened the building in May 1982.
