World Professional Darts Championship
The World Professional Darts Championship is one of the most important tournaments in the darts calendar. Originally held as an annual event between 1978 and 1993, players then broke off into two separate organisations after a controversial split in the game. Each organisation, the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) then arranged their own World Championships, the former in January the latter in December. As a result, there was no longer was an unified world champion in the sport for nearly three decades. The BDO version dated back to 1978, when it was held at the Heart of the Midlands nightclub, Nottingham. The following year it moved to the Jollees Cabaret Club, Stoke, where it stayed until 1985. Stuart Holden is an English former professional darts player. Career Holden played in the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round to Les Capewell. He had earlier lost in the first round of the 1980 Winmau World Masters to Jocky Wilson and reached the second round of the 1982 British Professional, beating Rab Smith in the first round before losing to Eric Bristow. 24 years after his appearance in the World Championship, Holden qualified for the PDC UK Open winning his preliminary and first round matches before losing in the second round to Nigel Birch. He then qualified for the 2007 Las Vegas Desert Classic, winning one of eight places in the second of the two qualifiers for the event. Keith Kelvin Deller (born 24 December 1959) is an English former professional darts player best known for winning the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship and Unipart British Professional Championship in 1987. He was the first qualifier ever to win the championship and remains one of the youngest champions in history. For his world championship win, Deller used 18-gram spring-loaded darts, later banned for tournament play but now legal again.
