A burgher was a rank or title of a privileged citizen of medieval towns in early modern Europe. Burghers formed the pool from which city officials could be drawn, and their immediate families that formed the social class of the medieval bourgeoisie. Admission Entry into burgher status varied from country to country and city to city. In Slovakia proof of ownership of property in a town was a condition for acceptance as a burgher. Privileges Any crime against a burgher was taken as a crime against the city community. In Switzerland if a burgher was assassinated, the other burghers had the right to bring the supposed murderer to trial by judicial combat. Governor Of Hofburg Palace
The Governor of Hofburg Palace is in charge of the Hofburg palace in Vienna. The office is under auspices of the '' Burghauptmannschaft''. The office exists since the Middle Ages and for most of the period and into the Baroque era the title was Burggrave. Starting in 1750 under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa the office became known as ''Burginspektor''. It was changed again in 1850 under the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I to ''Burghauptmann'', a title which also appeared however in the Middle Ages. Originally the office was entrusted to guard the castle and defend it in case of attack. The holder of the office and the administration was located in the castle as well. Austrian Nobility
The Austrian nobility (german: österreichischer Adel) is a status group that was officially abolished in 1919 after the fall of Austria-Hungary. The nobles are still part of Austrian society today, but they no longer retain any specific privileges. Austria's system of nobility was very similar to Germany's (see German nobility), as both countries were previously part of the Holy Roman Empire (962–1806). Any noble living in the Habsburg-ruled lands, and who owed allegiance to the dynasty and therefore to the Emperor, was also considered part of the Austrian aristocracy. This applied to any member of the Bohemian, Hungarian, Polish, Croatian, and other nobilities in the Habsburg dominions. Attempting to differentiate between ethnicities can be difficult, especially for nobles during the eras of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (1867–1918).
