Leonel Bastos
Leonel Levy Lopes Bastos, better known as Lionel Bastos, was born on 16 August 1956 in Maputo, Mozambique) and is a singer, songwriter, and music producer who works mainly in South Africa. In the 1990s he was part of a band called Be Like Water, who had a radio hit called ''Don't Go On'' in 1996. The band split up but did play reunion gigs in 2013. He has released five solo albums all of which were nominated for South African Music Awards ("SAMAs"). His second album, ''Simple'', won Best Adult Contemporary Album in 1999. Bastos' third album, ''Rising Above The Madness'', was released in 2001. Both the album and one of its songs, "Thank You," reached the Number 1 spot on the charts in June 2001, the song for two consecutive weeks. Maputo (), formerly named Lourenço Marques until 1976, is the Capital city, capital, and largest city of Mozambique. South African Music Awards
The South African Music Awards (often simply the SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa's music industry awards, established in 1995. The ceremony is held annually, usually in late April or May, with the judging process starting in November of the previous year. The nominations are typically announced at the end of March. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The show has mostly been held at the Super Bowl in Sun City, with the exception of three years, and broadcast live on national broadcaster, SABC. Farryl Purkiss
Farryl Purkiss is a South African-born singer-songwriter. Farryl first picked up the guitar when he was fifteen years old and began writing songs shortly after his sixteenth birthday. He self-released an EP in 2005 (''Chapter One'') that created waves in his home town of Durban, and later that year he began talks with 2Feet Music. He was signed to 2Feet Music soon after and started performing heavily outside of South Africa, leading up to the release of his full-length debut album, released in South Africa in 2007, to high acclaim, chart success and award nominations. Merseystate is a South African rock band formed by production duo Wayne Joshua and Shai Caleb. The band signed a record deal with local indie Label "Rivendale Records" and released their debut album ''The Lucky Ones'' in March 2008 with their first single "New Jersey Girl" rising to number 6 on the Top40 within 3 weeks. Wendy Oldfield
Wendy Oldfield (born in Cape Town, South Africa) is a South African singer. At the age of nineteen, she formed the rock group The Sweatband, and from 1999 to 2001, she was involved with the band Mondetta. Career In 1983, Oldfield was involved in the forming of Sweatband, a South African music group. She was the lead vocalist of the band, and released two albums. The group's biggest hit was "This Boy" which reached number 15 on the official South African top 20 in September 1986. In 1988, five years after the formation of the band, she left the group and started her own solo career in the music industry. Oldfield first rose to fame with the release of her debut album, ''Beautiful World''. This album won her the 1992 Oktave award for Best Female Vocalist. The Baxter Theatre Centre is a performing arts complex in Rondebosch, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The Baxter, as it is often known, is part of the University of Cape Town; it is also the second largest performing arts complex in Cape Town, after the Artscape Theatre Centre.
