Leonard Graves
Leonard Graves (1927-2000) was an American actor and singer best known for narrating the 1952 television documentary ''Victory at Sea.'' Graves was the only voice on the 26-part series, which won multiple awards, including a 1954 Emmy for Best Public Affairs Program, a special Peabody award and the Freedoms Foundation's George Washington Medal. Graves was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1927 and began his performing career in radio. He joined the Broadway cast of ''The King and I'' as the Interpreter and also understudied for Yul Brynner as the King, filling in on many occasions. Israel National Opera was Israel's principal opera company from its founding in 1947 until its closure in 1982. History The Israel National Opera was founded by the American soprano Edis de Phillipe. It staged over 1,000 performances throughout Israel by 1958. The scarcity of trained Israeli opera singers led the company to bring in international guest artists. Opera Memphis is a Memphis, Tennessee non-profit arts organization chartered in 1956 by a group of Memphians interested in producing regional opera. Charter signatories included noted Memphians Philip Belz and Walter Chandler. Early productions consisted mainly of local singers and local directors. During this initial period the Metropolitan Opera Company toured regularly through the area and performed in Memphis two to three times per year. As the company grew, the performers and directors became more regional and the sets and costumes more professional. By the mid-1970s, Opera Memphis began bringing in well-known singers like Leontyne Price, Beverly Sills, Joan Sutherland, Sherrill Milnes, and Birgit Nilsson to perform in lead roles.
