Leo Nowak (bishop)
Leo Nowak (born 17 March 1929) was the first bishop of the newly re-erected Roman Catholic Diocese of Magdeburg, Germany, from 1994 until 2001. He was born in Magdeburg. Career Nowak was ordained a priest on 10 May 1956 for the Diocese Paderborn. On 12 February 1990 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Magdeburg and the Titular Bishop of Cissa. He was created bishop on 24 March 1990. The main consecrator was Johannes Braun, his predecessor as Apostolic Administrator of Magdeburg, and co-consecrators were Johannes Joachim Degenhardt and Theodor Hubrich. On 27 June 1994 he was appointed bishop of Magdeburg and installed on 9 October 1994. Following canon law, Nowak offered his resignation to the pope in 2004, upon reaching the age of 75. He retired as bishop of Magdeburg on 17 March 2004. He was succeeded by Gerhard Feige. Gerhard Feige
Gerhard Feige (born 19 November 1951) is a German prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who has been bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Magdeburg since 2005. Feige previously was the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Magdeburg from 1999 to 2005. Biography Early life George Feige was born born in Halle, East Germany. Priesthood Feige was ordained a priest on 1 July 1978 for the Diocese of Magdeburg and worked in Salzwedel. He promoted and worked as a teacher of church history, patrology and study of eastern churches. Episcopacy On 11 September 1999 he was appointed titular bishop of Tisedi and an auxiliary bishop of Magdeburg. The Order of Merit of Saxony-Anhalt (german: Verdienstorden des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt) is the highest award of the German State of Saxony-Anhalt. Established 23 May 2006, the order is presented by the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt. The total number of living recipients is limited to 300. Recipients of the order are recognized for exceptional performance over a longer period of time or an extraordinary individual performance for Saxony-Anhalt and its citizens. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (german: Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or , BVO) is the only federal decoration of Germany. It is awarded for special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields. It was created by the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss, on 7 September 1951. Colloquially, the decorations of the different classes of the Order are also known as the Federal Cross of Merit (). It has been awarded to over 200,000 individuals in total, both Germans and foreigners. Johannes Joachim Degenhardt (31 January 1926 – 25 July 2002) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Paderborn (Germany) from 1974 until his death in 2002. He was named Cardinal in 2001. Life Degenhardt grew up in Hagen, where he attended the humanistic Albrecht Dürer '' Gymnasium''. He belonged to the Catholic youth group, Bund Neudeutschland.
