Lena Alexander
Lena M. Alexander, later Lena Duncan, (9 December 1899 – 29 March 1983) was a Scottish artist known for her portrait and flower paintings. Biography Alexander was born in Glasgow and for a time lived with her parents at Broughty Ferry. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and then, in the 1930s, moved to Kirkcudbright where she became an active member of the group of artists known as the Kirkcudbright School. Alexander mainly painted in pastel and watercolours, often depicting portraits and images of flowers, but also views of Venice and Paris. During her career Alexander exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Academy in London, at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and with the Society of Women Artists. Between 1919 and 1925 and then again from 1943 to 1972 she was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Scottish Academy. Greenock (; sco, Greenock; gd, Grianaig, ) is a town and administrative centre in the Inverclyde council areas of Scotland, council area in Scotland, United Kingdom and a former burgh of barony, burgh within the Counties of Scotland, historic county of Renfrewshire (historic), Renfrewshire, located in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. Stewartry Museum
The Stewartry Museum is a local museum in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, which covers the history of this part of Galloway. History The museum was originally founded in 1879 and housed on the top floor of Kirkcudbright Town Hall. The museum moved to its current building designed by architect Robert Wallace, in 1893 due to the increasing size of the museum collection. The museum was maintained by the Stewartry Museum Association until 1990 when control of both the museum and the building passed to Stewartry District Council. After the Scottish councils were reorganised in 1996, management of the museum was passed to Dumfries and Galloway Council. Collection Collections chiefly relate to the human and natural history of the Stewartry, also known as Kirkcudbrightshire. Kirkcudbright Town Hall
Kirkcudbright Town Hall is a municipal building in St Mary's Street, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. The building, which was the headquarters of Kirkcudbright Burgh Council, is a Category B listed building. History The first municipal building in the town was the Kirkcudbright Tolbooth which was completed in 1629. Like other tolbooths, Kirkcudbright Tolbooth had been primarily designed as a prison and, in 1859, the town clerk, William McLellan, and other burgh leaders started a campaign for new public rooms: the site they selected was open land on the east side of St Mary's Street. The new public rooms were erected in 1863 at a cost of £1,900 but within a few years the foundations were found to be unsafe and it became necessary to replace the building with a new structure. The foundation stone for the new building was laid by the Lord Lieutenant of Kirkcudbright, the Earl of Selkirk, on 7 August 1878. McLean Museum
The McLean Museum and Art Gallery (now officially the Watt Institution) is a museum and art gallery situated in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. It is the main museum in the Inverclyde area, it is free to visit and was opened in 1876. Most notably it features an exhibition of items related to James Watt, the Greenock-born inventor, a Mummy Cartonnage from Herakleopolis Magna and a collection of British and Scottish art. The Glasgow School of Art (GSA; gd, Sgoil-ealain Ghlaschu) is a higher education art school based in Glasgow, Scotland, offering undergraduate degrees, post-graduate awards (both taught and research-led), and PhDs in architecture, fine art, and design. The school is housed in a number of buildings in the centre of Glasgow, upon Garnethill, an area first developed by William Harley of Blythswood Hill in the early 1800s. The most famous of its buildings was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in phases between 1896 and 1909. The eponymous Mackintosh Building soon became one of the city's iconic landmarks and stood for over 100 years. It is an icon of the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style).
