Pierre Louis Victor Lemoine (October 21, 1823 in Delme, Moselle - December 11, 1911) was a celebrated and prolific French flower breeder who, among other accomplishments, created many of today's lilac varieties. As a result of his accomplishments, the term ''French lilac'' has come to mean all cultivars of the common lilac that have double flowers, regardless of their origin. Early years Lemoine was born to a family of skilled gardeners in Delme, Lorraine, France on October 21, 1823. His father and grandfather managed large garden estates at the time of his birth. The family was affluent enough for Lemoine to attend an exclusive boys school nearby. With his family's connections, he was able to apprentice with three leading horticulturalists in France. Roger Le Moine (6 November 1933, La Malbaie – 12 July 2004, Ottawa) was an emeritus professor of Québec and French literature at the University of Ottawa. Biography After growing up in La Malbaie, Le Moine briefly studied law before opting for literature (doctorate in 1970). As a professor, he specialized in European exotic literature, freemasonry, and, more importantly, participated in the rediscovery of Québec's 18th and 19th century literature. He was elected at the Société des Dix (1988) and of the Royal Society of Canada (1993). RenĂ© Alphonse Lemoine (29 December 1905 – 19 December 1995) was a French fencer. He won a gold medal in the team foil event at the 1932 Summer Olympics and a silver in the same event at the 1936 Summer Olympics. At the world championships, official and unofficial, Lemoine won an individual gold in 1931 and a bronze in 1937. He also won team silver medals in 1930, 1934, 1935 and 1937. Lemoine was the son of a general manager of Peugeot and was trained in mathematics and law. After briefly studying in Chad, he went to Equatorial Africa in 1938 and became a coffee farmer and exporter of colonial goods. During World War II, he headed the civil and military resistance in Central African Republic and supported French forces of Charles de Gaulle.
