Lelydorp
Lelydorp (Sranan Tongo: ''Kofi Djompo'') is the capital city of Wanica District, located in Suriname’s north. With a population of 18,663 (2012), it is the second largest city in Suriname, after Paramaribo. History Pad van Wanica For centuries the Pad van Wanica (path of Wanica) has been the only road that leads from Paramaribo to the south. How this road came to be is unknown. It is speculated that the original inhabitants established the path. Be that as it may, a road was built there, and on either side of the road parcels were issued away. The oldest part of this road is the northern part of it, which is closest to Paramaribo. Wanica has a population of 118,222 and an area of 443 km2. Following neighboring Paramaribo, Wanica is the second most populated and urbanisation, urbanized district of Suriname. Two-thirds of the country's population live in these two districts. History The district was created in 1983 out of parts of the former Suriname (district), Suriname District. The district was named Wanica after Pad van Wanica, the main road, Wanica Creek (present in the district), and the fact that the name had already been used on old maps. The discovery of gold in Brokopondo District, Brokopondo and Sipaliwini District, Sipaliwini lead to the construction of the Lawa Railway and growth of the villages next to the railway line, and especially Kofi Djompo. Lawa Railway
The Lawa Railway (Dutch language, Dutch: ''Lawaspoorweg'' or later ''Landsspoorweg'') was a single-track metre gauge railway in Suriname. It was built during the gold rush in the early 20th century, from the harbour town Paramaribo to Dam at the Sara Creek (river), Sara Creek, but it was not extended to the gold fields at the Lawa River (South America), Lawa River, as originally intended. History Private businessmen came up with the first plans, and the Governor of Suriname Cornelis Lely announced in 1902 that the government would build the railway to facilitate the exploitation of the gold fields. Cornelis Lely
Cornelis Lely (; 23 September 1854 – 22 January 1929) was a Dutch politician of the Liberal Union and civil engineer. He oversaw the passage of an act of parliament authorising construction of the Zuiderzee Works, a huge project – designed to his own plans – that turned the Zuiderzee into a lake and made possible the conversion of a vast area of former seabed into dry land. Lelystad, the capital of the province of Flevoland, is named after him. Early life Cornelis Lely was born on 23 September 1854 in Amsterdam, son of an oilseed trader. Lely went to the Hogere Burgerschool (HBS). He later studied at the Polytechnic School of Delft and graduated as civil engineer in 1875. The districts of Suriname, ten districts of Suriname are divided into 63 resorts (Dutch language, Dutch: ''ressorten''). Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood; in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. Bhai (writer)
James Ramlall, also known as Bhai (26 January 1935 – 19 December 2018), was a Surinamese poet. Biography Bhai was born in the former district Suriname. After getting his teaching degree, he became a teacher at an elementary school in Harmelen, Netherlands. After three years of teaching, he decided to become a student. First he studied Dutch language and literature, and pedagogy. Later he went on to study Indian philosophy and religion, and wrote his doctoral thesis on "The Problem of Being in Heidegger and Sankara". When Bhai returned to his native Suriname, he became Assistant Director of Culture and later Director of Culture of the Surinamese Ministry of Education and Culture, and showed himself very active in the cultural world. He founded the conference center "Caribbean Centre" in Lelydorp. Bhai wrote poetry mainly in Dutch, but some was in Hindi, which was published in the magazine ''Soela''.
