Albert Fear Leffingwell (April 24, 1895 – 1946) was an American advertising executive and novelist. He wrote crime and mystery thrillers under his own name, as well as the pseudonyms "Dana Chambers" and "Giles Jackson". Biography Leffingwell was born April 24, 1895, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the first son of Dr. Albert Tracy Leffingwell, and Dr. Elizabeth Fear. He had two brothers: Thomas Arthur Leffingwell former Mayor of Aurora, New York and Dr. Dana Jackson Leffingwell, Associate Professor of Zoology at the State College of Washington. Albert Leffingwell graduated from Harvard University in 1916. While still at Harvard, he wrote a book of poetry, ''Castles in Spain'', and had two poems published in the Harvard publication, ''Made to Order''. Charles Wesley Leffingwell
Charles Wesley Leffingwell (December 5, 1840 – October 10, 1928) was an American author, educator, and Episcopal priest. Biography Charles Wesley Leffingwell was born in Ellington, Connecticut. He was a descendant of Thomas Leffingwell, known as one of the founders of Norwich, Connecticut. He studied at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He later studied at Nashotah House Theological Seminary before ordination to the diaconate (1867) and priesthood (1868). In 1868, he founded St. Mary's School in Knoxville at the invitation of Henry John Whitehouse, and in 1890 he founded St Alban's School for Boys in the same city. Leffingwell was editor of ''The Living Church'' magazine from 1880 to 1900. From 1906 he was President of the Leffingwell Rancho in Whittier, California, the land for which he had acquired earlier. Ernest de Koven Leffingwell (January 13, 1875January 27, 1971) was an arctic explorer, geologist and Spanish–American War veteran. During the period from 1906 to 1914, Leffingwell spent nine summers and six winters on the Arctic coast of Alaska, making 31 trips by dog sled or small boats. He created the first accurate map of a large part of the Alaskan arctic coastline. He was the first to scientifically describe permafrost and to pose theories about permafrost which have largely proven true. He accurately identified the oil potential of the North Slope region of Alaska. Shelly "Lee" Leffingwell (born October 13, 1939) is an American environmentalist and politician who served as the mayor of Austin, Texas, from June 22, 2009 to January 6, 2015. He was first elected to the Austin City Council in 2005, and won re-election in 2008. He was elected mayor in 2009, and subsequently re-elected to a second three-year term on May 12, 2012, with over 52% of the vote. Frank Seth Leffingwell (November 16, 1868 – August 6, 1945) was a businessman, stone cutter, horse trader, real estate agent, officer of the law, as well as a municipal and provincial politician who was elected to public office in both the United States and Canada. Early life Leffingwell was born on November 16, 1868, in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He married his wife Ida May Erdman on December 24, 1890, and they moved to Benton County, Minnesota. In his early years Leffingwell traded horses and cut granite. Leffingwell joined the Benton County police force and became deputy sheriff in 1898. In 1900 he ran in a 3-way election for the position of sheriff as the Democratic candidate. He won the hotly contested race by 119 votes to become Benton County's new sheriff, defeating incumbent Democratic sheriff Andrew LaVoie. Leffingwell, Inc., New Jersey, management author, and the founder of National Office Management Association. Leffingwell Camp Site
The Leffingwell Camp Site, on Flaxman Island, west of Barter Island on the Arctic Coast of Alaska, was used by polar explorer and geologist Ernest de Koven Leffingwell on his pioneering Anglo-American Polar Expedition of 1906–1908, which aimed to explore the Beaufort Sea. The expedition's ship, the ''Duchess of Bedford'', was allowed to become locked in ice which eventually destroyed it. The camp site was chosen before the ship was locked in ice, and was not merely the nearest landfall. The site was used by Leffingwell over several years, beyond the end of that expedition. Leffingwell created the first accurate map of a section of Alaskan coastline. He was the first to scientifically describe permafrost and to pose theories about permafrost which have largely proven true. He accurately identified the oil potential of the area, including assessing that it was not, in his day, technologically or economically feasible to develop it. Leffingwell Inn
The Leffingwell Inn (now known as Leffingwell House Museum) is a historic inn at 348 Washington Street in the Norwichtown section of Norwich, Connecticut. With a construction history dating to 1675, it is one of Connecticut's oldest buildings, and was an important meeting place during the American Revolutionary War. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Description and history The Leffingwell Inn is located just south of the junction of Town and Washington Streets, at the southern end of the Norwichtown area. It is a -story wood-frame structure, built in stages in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its oldest part, the northeastern corner, dates to 1675 and was built by Stephen Backus.
