The Lee Steere Stakes is a Perth Racing Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged three years old and older, over a distance of 1400 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Perth in November. Prize money is A$250,000. History The event is named after Ernest Augustus Lee Steere, former chairman of the Western Australian Turf Club and owner of the champion Eurythmic. In 2003 the race was run at Belmont Park Racecourse. Between 1989 and 2000 the race was held in mid December. Prior to 1989 the race was scheduled during the Perth Cup Carnival held close to New Year's Day. Ascot Racecourse (Western Australia)
Ascot Racecourse is the major racecourse in Perth, Western Australia, situated approximately east of the Perth central business district, with the headquarters of the Perth Racing positioned directly opposite. It is regarded as the "grand old lady" of Australian racecourses. It has a track with modern, well drained turf, and a track inclining straight regarded by experts as the most severe test of stayers in Australia. History In 1848 a race meeting was held on Hardey's "Grove Farm" alongside the Swan River. Soon afterwards a site was selected for a permanent course on Hardey's propertythis became the Perth Race Course (later Ascot Racecourse). In 1852, the West Australian Turf Club was formed. Belmont Park, Western Australia
Belmont Park Racecourse is one of the two major horse racing venues within the Perth, Western Australia metropolitan area, the other being Ascot Racecourse, and is located just outside of the central business district on the Burswood Peninsula surrounded by the Swan River. Black Heart Bart (foaled 11 September 2010) is a retired six-time Group 1 winning Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse. Background Black Heart Bart was purchased by senior part owner Kim Renner for $20,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. Racing career 2013/14: three-year-old season Unraced as a two-year-old, Black Heart Bart made his race debut on the 7 December 2013, finishing unplaced at Western Australia's Ascot Racecourse. Black Heart Bart would have a further seven starts as a three-year-old without success. 2014/15: four-year-old season Black Heart Bart won his first race on the 19 October 2014 in a maiden race at Bunbury Racecourse. Eurythmic (horse)
Eurythmic (1916–1925) was a versatile Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who had the ability to produce a brilliant finishing run in staying races and he also won important sprint races, too. At four he won 12 of his 13 starts including the Caulfield Cup and Sydney Cup. When Eurythmic finished racing he was the greatest stake-winner in Australia. He was later inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Breeding He was bred by the young breeder, Noel Thompson at the Yarraman Stud, west of Scone, New South Wales. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. Ernest Augustus Lee Steere
Sir Ernest Augustus Lee Steere (19 March 186622 December 1957) was a prominent Australian businessman and pastoralist. Biography Lee Steere was born on 19 March 1866 in Beverley and was the second son of Augustus Lee Steere. He worked in the Murchison on various stations during the 1880s and eventually bought Belele Station, near Meekatharra in 1888. The property was mostly undeveloped at the time but Lee Steere soon brought it to a state of high production. Later, he and his son Ernest would found the merino studs at Chilimony and Bowes near Northampton. In his time at Belele he expanded its size from to and acquired nearby Annean Station. His interests later expanded and he was partly responsible for the freezing works at Fremantle and the woollen works in Albany.
