Leda And The Swan (Tintoretto)
''Leda and the Swan'' is a c.1550-1560 oil on canvas painting by Jacopo Tintoretto. Doubts on its autograph status were quelled by its restorations in 1988 and 1994. Art historians do not agree on its dating, though most now place it in the 1550s, the same period as his '' Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan'' ( Alte Pinakothek) and '' Joseph and Potiphar's Wife'' (Museo del Prado). '' Judith and Holofernes'' (Prado) was also previously dated to that decade but has now been downgraded to a studio work. In the late 18th century the work was in the Orleans Collection in Paris, before being purchased in London by the Duke of Bridgewater, then in 1857 by Paul Norton, and finally being donated by Arturo De Noè Walker in 1895 to its present owner, the Uffizi in Florence. Another version from Alessandro Contini-Bonacossi's collection is also owned by the Uffizi, from which the servant was later cut-off - this version was probably t ...

Jacopo Tintoretto
Tintoretto ( , , ; born Jacopo Robusti; late September or early October 1518Bernari and de Vecchi 1970, p. 83.31 May 1594) was an Italian painter identified with the Venetian school. His contemporaries both admired and criticized the speed with which he painted, and the unprecedented boldness of his brushwork. For his phenomenal energy in painting he was termed Il Furioso ("The Furious"). His work is characterised by his muscular figures, dramatic gestures and bold use of perspective, in the Mannerist style. Life The years of apprenticeship Tintoretto was born in Venice in 1518. His father, Battista, was a dyer, or ''tintore''; hence the son got the nickname of Tintoretto, "little dyer", or "dyer's boy". Tintoretto is known to have had at least one sibling, a brother named Domenico, although an unreliable 17th-century account says his siblings numbered 22. The family was believed to have originated from Brescia, in Lombardy, then part of the Republic of Venice. Older studies ga ...

Mars And Venus Surprised By Vulcan
''Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan'' or ''Venus, Vulcan and Mars'' is a 1551-1552 oil on canvas painting by Jacopo Tintoretto, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The painting depicts a scene of extra-marital sex. The goddess Venus is lying nude on a couch whilst her lover Mars is hiding helmeted under a bed. Venus' husband Vulcan, tipped off by Apollo, has just returned unexpectedly. Luckily for the adulterous couple he has become distracted by his wife's naked body, disregarding the warnings of his dog. Cupid is sleeping in a cot by the window. The event was a popular subject during the Renaissance, emphasising the real dangers of adultery, but in this work Tintoretto has introduced an element of comedy. Maybe Venus can distract Vulcan long enough to allow Mars to make a silent getaway. It is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses a significant collection of Old Master paintings. The name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection—from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. All three galleries are part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, an organization of the Free state of Bavaria. The building King Ludwig I of Bavaria ordered Leo von Klenze to erect a new building for the gallery for the Wittelsbach collection in 1826. The Alte Pinakothek was the largest museum in the world and structurally and conceptually well advanced through the convenient accommodation of skylights for the cabinets. Orleans Collection
The Orleans Collection was a very important collection of over 500 paintings formed by Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans, mostly acquired between about 1700 and his death in 1723. Apart from the great royal-become-national collections of Europe it is arguably the greatest private collection of Western art, especially Italian, ever assembled, and probably the most famous, helped by the fact that most of the collection has been accessible to the public since it was formed, whether in Paris, or subsequently in London, Edinburgh and elsewhere. The core of the collection was formed by 123 paintings from the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden, which itself had a core assembled from the war booty of the sacks by Swedish troops of Munich in 1632 and Prague in 1648 during the Thirty Years War. During the French Revolution the collection was sold by Louis Philippe d'Orléans, ''Philippe Égalité'', and most of it acquired by an aristocratic English consortium led by Francis Ege ...
