Leavenworth is a town in Jennings Township, Crawford County, Indiana, along the Ohio River. The 2010 US Census recorded a population of 238 persons. History Foundation and early settlement Leavenworth was laid out in 1818 in an oxbow of the Ohio River, directly under a large bluff called Mt. Eden. The bluff forms part of the Indiana Ridge and faces directly across the river toward Kentucky. "Old Leavenworth" (the original town, now practically abandoned) was almost completely wiped out by the huge 1937 Ohio River flood, as it was built directly on the floodplain. The town was founded by Zebulon Leavenworth and his brother Seth, natives of Connecticut. In 1824, a wood yard was established in the town to provide fuel to steamboats, and David Lyon had a boatbuilding industry here in 1830. The Whitcomb brickyard was also a flourishing industry. Leavenworth is an unincorporated community located in Leavenworth Township in Brown County, Minnesota, United States. The elevation is 1,004 feet. It was situated on two locations in Brown County, one before the Dakota War of 1862 (section 14 of the township, near Cottonwood River), and in section 27 of the township along the Cottonwood River after the war. History Mississippi Indians ( Chocktaw) migrated from the south to the Leavenworth area, settling near bodies of water where there were fish and water. River banks and the areas around lakes provided timber that was used for fuel. Later, when people began to homestead on area lands, they settled along the banks of the Cottonwood River. Located along the Shetek Trail, an east-west wagon trail, Leavenworth was organized on April 16, 1857 and platted that year in section 14. Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility
The Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility (J.R.C.F.) is a military prison at 831 Sabalu Road, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas which opened in 2010. The prison on has a design specification of 512 beds with 43 in special housing and the rest in general housing and dormitory. The prison handles inmates sentenced to terms of ten years or less. It also will house people who are awaiting trial. It is one of three major federal prisons on federal land in Leavenworth.
