''Le portefaix'' (The Porter) (full title ''Le portefaix ou le jardinier de Grenade (The Porter, or the Gardener of Grenada)'') is an opéra comique in three acts composed by José Melchor Gomis. The libretto by Eugène Scribe is based on an episode in ''Le Comte de Villamayor'' by M. Mortonval (Alexandre Furcy Guesdon). It was originally offered to the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer, but he was contracted instead by the opera manager Louis Véron to create a five-act grand opera (''Les Huguenots''). French-language Operas
French opera is one of Europe's most important operatic traditions, containing works by composers of the stature of Rameau, Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc and Messiaen. Many foreign-born composers have played a part in the French tradition as well, including Lully, Gluck, Salieri, Cherubini, Spontini, Meyerbeer, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and Offenbach. Opera is a form of theatre in which music is a fundamental component and dramatic roles are taken by singers. François-Louis(-Ferdinand) Henry (12 May 1786 – 22 February 1855) was a French baritone, who sang for about 35 years with the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he created numerous leading roles. A tenor is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. Jean-Baptiste Chollet
Jean-Baptiste Marie Chollet (20 May 1798 – 10 January 1892) was a French musician and operatic baritone. He also composed a few romances and nocturnes. He married the opera singer Geneviève-Aimé-Zoë Prévost and their daughter Caroline Chollet also became an opera singer under the stage name Mademoiselle Monrose. Life Born in Paris, Chollet studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where from the age of eight he studied solfège and violin. He graduated with a prize in solfège in 1814 and began singing as a high baritone in the church choir at Saint-Eustache, Paris, where his father was choirmaster. Geneviève-Aimé-Zoë Prévost (15 April 1802, Paris – 10 April 1861, Paris) was a French operatic soprano. She created leading roles in some of the most notable French opéras comiques of the first half of the nineteenth century, including "Fra Diavolo" by Daniel Auber and "Le postillon de Lonjumeau" by Adolphe Adam.
