Laurence Skelly
Laurence David Skelly MLC is a Manx politician, who has served as President of Tynwald since July 2021. Political career He was elected as one of the three MHKs for Rushen in 2011, with 19.4% of the vote and was re-elected in 2016 as one of the two members for the new Rushen constituency following the boundary review in 2013 with 21% of the vote. In March 2014 he was appointed Minister for Infrastructure and following the resignation of John Shimmin in July of that year was appointed Minister for Economic Development. Following the 2016 Manx general election, Skelly considered standing as Chief Minister but decided not to do so and instead continued to hold the Economic Development portfolio within the Howard Quayle administration. Rushen
Rushen ( ; gv, Rosien), formally Kirk Christ Rushen, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located in the south of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of the same name. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Rushen, and the majority of the population, is now covered by the village districts of Port Erin and Port St Mary. As a result, there is an exclave of the parish district which includes the Calf of Man. Other settlements in the parish include Cregneash. Local government For the purposes of local government, the majority of the area of the historic parish formed a single parish district, with Commissioners, but this has now been amalgamated with Arbory. 2011 Manx General Election
General elections were held on the Isle of Man on 29 September 2011 to elect 24 members to the island's lower house, the House of Keys. 60,000 residents were eligible to vote, including 16- and 17-year-olds. Juan Watterson
Juan Paul Watterson FCA CMgr FCMI FRSA SHK (born 1980) is a Manx politician, who is Speaker of the House of Keys, and a member for Rushen, in the Isle of Man. Early life Born in 1980 to John and Alison Watterson, he was educated at Rushen Infants School, Rushen Junior School and Castle Rushen High School. Qualification and professional memberships Watterson attended the University of Lincoln (University of Lincolnshire & Humberside) where he graduated in 2001 with a First Class BA (Hons) in Management. He joined international accountancy firm KPMG where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2005. He was the ICAEW Chairman of the National Student Council, and later served on the institute's Young Professionals Advisory Board, Public Sector Advisory Board and Members and Commercial Board of the Institute as well as having been part of its 90-member governing ICAEW Council. Tynwald
Tynwald ( gv, Tinvaal), or more formally, the High Court of Tynwald ( gv, Ard-whaiyl Tinvaal) or Tynwald Court, is the legislature of the Isle of Man. It consists of two chambers, known as the branches of Tynwald: the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly chosen Legislative Council. When the two chambers sit together, they become "Tynwald Court". The chambers sit jointly, on Tynwald Day at St John's for largely ceremonial purposes, and usually once a month in the Legislative Buildings in Douglas. Otherwise, the two chambers sit separately, with the House of Keys originating most legislation, and the Legislative Council acting as a revising chamber. 2021 Manx General Election
General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 23 September 2021. A record ten women were elected, twice as many as the five elected at the previous election. For the first time, in two constituencies, both elected MHKs were women. Four government ministers failed to be re-elected. Electoral system The 24 members of the House of Keys are elected from 12 constituencies, each of which returns 2 members. Election is by multiple non-transferable vote in each constituency, with voters having two votes (although voters are not required to use both) for the two seats. The Chief Minister is appointed after a general election on nomination by the House of Keys. Candidates A total of 65 candidates ran. Chief Minister Of The Isle Of Man
The Chief Minister (Manx: ''Ard-shirveishagh'') is the executive head of the Isle of Man Government. The office derives from that of Chairman of the Executive Council. Before 1980 the Executive Council was chaired by the Lieutenant Governor, but thereafter the chairman was elected by Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man. The title was changed to "Chief Minister" in 1986. The Chief Minister is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor on the nomination of the House of Keys (formerly the nomination of Tynwald) after a general election for the House of Keys. The Department for Enterprise (''Rheynn Gastid Dellal'') is one of eight departments of the Isle of Man Government. Rushen (constituency)
Rushen ( gv, Rosien) is a House of Keys constituency in the south of the Isle of Man which incorporates most of the parish of Rushen together with the village districts of Port Erin and Port St Mary. Until 2016 the constituency covered the whole of the sheading of Rushen except for the parish of Malew and the town of Castletown, and elected three MHKs. (Malew was removed from the constituency in 1986.) In 2016 the constituency boundaries were redrawn.
