Chief Minister Of The Isle Of Man
The Chief Minister (Manx: ''Ard-shirveishagh'') is the executive head of the Isle of Man Government. The office derives from that of Chairman of the Executive Council. Before 1980 the Executive Council was chaired by the Lieutenant Governor, but thereafter the chairman was elected by Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man. The title was changed to "Chief Minister" in 1986. The Chief Minister is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor on the nomination of the House of Keys (formerly the nomination of Tynwald) after a general election for the House of Keys. He holds office until the next general election (i.e. normally for five years) and is eligible for re-appointment, but may be removed from office by simple majority in Tynwald on a vote of no confidence in the Council of Ministers.Council of Ministers Act 1990 section 2 The incumbent Chief Minister is Alfred Cannan, who has held the office since 12 October 2021. Coat Of Arms Of The Isle Of Man
The Coat of Arms of the Isle of Man, blazoned ''gules (heraldry), Gules three legs in armour flexed at the knee and conjoined at the thigh, all proper, garnished and spurred Or (heraldry), or'', dates from the late 13th century. The present version dates from 12 July 1996. As the Isle of Man is a Crown dependency and the present Lord of Man is Charles III, King Charles III of the United Kingdom, the arms are more accurately described as the Arms of His Majesty in right of the Isle of Man.#I1, ''Island Facts'' (n.d.). The origin of the ''triskeles'' (''three Dexter and sinister, dexter legs conjoined at the hips and flexed in triangle'') is obscure, but it appears to stem from the Scottish takeover of the island in 1265. Onchan (parish)
Onchan ( ; gv, Connaghyn), historically Kirk Conchan, is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle, though before 1796 it was in the sheading of Garff. Administratively, part of the historic parish of Onchan is now covered by part of the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Local government For the purposes of local government, most of the historic parish forms a single district with Commissioners. In 1896, an area in the south-west of the historic parish of Onchan became part of the borough of Douglas, since when it has been governed by a municipal corporation with 18 councillors and an elected mayor. Richard Kenneth Corkill (born 1951) was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, December 2001 to December 2004 and an elected member of the House of Keys from 1991 to 2006. Donald Gelling
Donald James Gelling CBE CP, CInstSMM (born 5 July 1938) is a Manx former politician, who is a former Chief Minister of the Isle of Man who served two terms as Head of the Government. Early life and career Gelling was born on Tynwald Day (5 July) 1938 in Santon, a village to the south-west of Douglas. He was apprenticed in engineering from 1954 to 1959 and after National Service in the Royal Air Force he became a salesman of agricultural machinery and vehicles. He was a general manager of his company from 1969. His political career began immediately as his National Service ended in 1961 when he was elected as a Santon Parish Commissioner; he served for 25 years and had five terms as Chairman of the Commissioners. Rushen (constituency)
Rushen ( gv, Rosien) is a House of Keys constituency in the south of the Isle of Man which incorporates most of the parish of Rushen together with the village districts of Port Erin and Port St Mary. Until 2016 the constituency covered the whole of the sheading of Rushen except for the parish of Malew and the town of Castletown, and elected three MHKs. (Malew was removed from the constituency in 1986.) In 2016 the constituency boundaries were redrawn.
