Lauren Mahon
Lauren Stacey Mahon (born 2 May 1985) is a British cancer activist and founder of Girls vs Cancer, an online community raising awareness and supporting cancer patients. She was named in the BBC ''100 Women'' in 2019. Life and career Mahon was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer in 2016 and thought she was going to die because she misunderstood grade three cancer for stage four cancer, which is an advanced cancer. While being treated for cancer, she searched the internet to find people with a similar condition but could not. She then created a blog, Girls vs Cancer, where she shared her cancer experience and designed T-shirts to create awareness. Later she became a co-host of BBC podcast '' You, Me and the Big C'' sharing her cancer story in a comic manner. Hammersmith
Hammersmith is a district of West London, England, southwest of Charing Cross. ''You, Me and the Big C'' is a British podcast about life with, treatment of and other topics relating to the disease cancer. The podcast was originally hosted by three former or current cancer patients; Deborah James, Lauren Mahon and Rachael Bland. Since Bland's death from cancer in September 2018, the podcast had also been occasionally co-hosted by her widower Steve Bland. James died from cancer in June 2022, leaving Mahon as the only surviving original host. In January 2023, it was announced that Bland and Mahon would be leaving the podcast but stated that they wanted the podcast to continue. Contents The podcast is designed to have a light-hearted feel to it. FreeBMD is a UK-based charitable organisation and website founded in 1998, and established as charity in 2003 to create a free transcription of the indexes to Births, Marriages and Deaths (BMD) for England and Wales from 1837 to 1983. It also provides on-line access to images of the pages of the BMD indexes. Since 2014 FreeBMD has been part of Free UK Genealogy. Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Signs of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, milk rejection, fluid coming from the nipple, a newly inverted nipple, or a red or scaly patch of skin. In those with distant spread of the disease, there may be bone pain, swollen lymph nodes, shortness of breath, or yellow skin. Risk factors for developing breast cancer include obesity, a lack of physical exercise, alcoholism, hormone replacement therapy during menopause, ionizing radiation, an early age at first menstruation, having children late in life or not at all, older age, having a prior history of breast cancer, and a family history of breast cancer. Rachael Bland
Rachael Rebecca Bland (née Hodges; 21 January 1978 – 5 September 2018) was a British journalist and presenter from Cardiff, Wales. She worked for BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC World News and ''BBC North West Tonight''. She was known for her podcast, ''You, Me and the Big C'', which was broadcast while she was ill with breast cancer, and in which she discussed issues and treatment of the disease. In the final months of her life she wrote a memoir, ''For Freddie'', which was published posthumously early the following year. Career Bland was born in Cardiff. She started her career presenting news bulletins with the BBC Local Radio station BBC Wiltshire. She then moved to BBC Radio 5 Live, at first reading the news on Richard Bacon's show, where she became the straight talking foil to Bacon on The Special Half Hour Club. Dame Deborah Anne James (1 October 1981 – 28 June 2022) was an English journalist, educator, podcast host and charity campaigner from London. In 2016, she was diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer and went on to host the '' You, Me and the Big C'' podcast on BBC Radio 5 Live about her struggles with her illness. Personal life James was born in London on 1 October 1981 to Heather and Alistair James. She attended Salesian School, Chertsey, later going on to study economics at the University of Exeter. Her mother was a gymnastics coach, and James trained at Woking Gymnastics Club. By the age of 9, she was training 30 hours a week. James married Sebastien Bowen in 2008; the couple had two children.
