Laura Sturgeon
Laura Viviana Sturgeon (born February 15, 1965) is an American politician. She is a member of the Delaware Senate for District 4 and the first Latina to serve in the Delaware General Assembly. Early life and career Sturgeon was born in Florida and raised in Delaware. Her parents were immigrants from Argentina. She graduated from Brandywine High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Delaware. She taught in Delaware public schools for over 20 years and served as a leader in the Delaware State Education AssociationDSEA, the largest union in Delaware. Political career Sturgeon was active in community groups and nonprofit organizations but had never held public office prior to challenging Republican incumbent Greg Lavelle, who had been in the General Assembly for 18 years, where he served as Senate Minority Whip. Delaware's 4th Senate District
Delaware's 4th Senate district is one of 21 districts in the Delaware Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Laura Sturgeon since 2018, following her defeat of incumbent Republican Gregory Lavelle. Geography District 4 covers many of Wilmington's northwestern suburbs in New Castle County, including Hockessin, Greenville, Pike Creek, Talleyville, Granogue, Brandywine, Alapocas, Montchanin, Runnymeade, Delaware Heights, Rockland, Winterthur, Wooddale, and other unincorporated areas. Like all districts in the state, the 4th Senate district is located entirely within Delaware's at-large congressional district. A general election was held in the U.S. state of Delaware on November 6, 2018. Half of Delaware's executive officers were up for election as well as a United States Senate seat and Delaware's at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives.
