Latvijas Basketbola Līga
The Latvian Basketball League (LBL; lv, Latvijas Basketbola līga) also known as the '' Pafbet'' LBL for sponsorship reasons, is the national basketball championship in Latvia; composed of 6 teams. It is considered the biggest basketball league in Latvia. The LBL is a part of Latvian Basketball Association, which is the national governing body of basketball in Latvia. Its 6 teams are located in 5 cities; two in Riga, and one in Ventspils, Liepāja, Valmiera, and Ogre. The LBL season usually runs from September to April. The league was founded in 1992, and its first season was played in the same year. History Early years The first LBL season was played in 1992. From 1992 to 1999 all championships were won by BK Brocēni, however, from 2000 to 2006 BK Ventspils were the champions. In 2007, ASK Rīga stopped BK Ventspils winning streak. Aigars Vītols (born February 15, 1976) is a former Latvian professional basketball player and a current politician for the Latvian Union of Greens and Farmers. Sports career Vītols played the shooting guard position: He played most of his career in Latvia, winning six national championships and one finals MVP award. When he played for Spanish team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada, he was the best three-point shooter of Liga ACB in the 2005-06 season. Ainars Bagatskis (born 29 March 1967) is a Latvian former professional basketball player and coach, who currently works as the head coach of CSO Voluntari of the Liga Națională and the senior Ukraine national team. BK Skonto
BK Skonto is the name of a former professional basketball club that was based in Riga, Latvia. History BK Skonto was founded in 2001 as a basketball section of FC Skonto. Basketball club was created by FC Skonto president Guntis Indriksons and basketball legend Valdis Valters. Skonto took the place in Latvian Basketball League from BK Brocēni, other basketball club from Riga, which stopped to exist in 2001. Skonto's main focus was developing young Latvian talents and they did so by giving opportunity to rising stars such as Andris Biedriņš, Kristaps Valters, Jānis Blūms, Sandis Valters, Kaspars Bērziņš, Kristaps Janičenoks and others. BK Valmiera
BK Valmiera, named Valmiera Ordo for sponsorship reasons, was a professional basketball club based in Valmiera, Latvia which played in the Latvian Basketball League and Baltic Basketball League. Since 2018 the club is on hiatus. In the 2015-2016 season finals, Valmiera Ordo won its first and only national championship, beating VEF Rīga in a seven-game series. BK Barons/LDz (previously Barons/LMT) was a professional basketball club which is based in Riga, Latvia. The team played in the first division of Latvian Basketball League. History Barons kvartāls was an integral part of Latvia's recent basketball history, as it (under the name Princips) was one of the foundation teams of the Latvian Basketball League (LBL) in 1992. In the first season Princips carried off bronze in the LBL. After two seasons Princips was renamed the LainERS, making their way into Latvia's basketball history with its first American legionary Mikki Jackson, with a cheerleader show and first ever game programmes in the Latvian league. ASK Rīga is a former professional basketball club that was based in Riga, Latvia. "ASK" stood for "Armijas Sporta Klubs" (in English: Army Sports Club).
